so i'm new on here, and new to the whole diesel deal too...
im considering buying a 2005 F-250 lariat or King Ranch, but i'm not too sure about them...
i like diesel trucks, but i dont haul ANYTHING...ever...
i know diesel is pricey, but it seems worth it to me, since i like them so much...
How do you think the fuel milage would be?? i drive all highway, NO backroads, NO city, and I have a Z-28, so i wont be getting on the throttle in the PSD much if i go that route...
Are chips worth the money??
And is there a way to change the gears in the rear end to a highway gear??
sorry for so many questions, and im sure all these questions are answered on here, but i want more direct answers if you know what i mean...
Thanks in advance for any help!!
I have 05 KR PSD CrewCab 4x4 SB with a 3.73 rear end (and a shell) and get 21+ mpg on the freeway around 55-60mph according to the on board computer (which according to people is always a little higher). The truck has 63K miles and only mods are a air rad intake and a magnaflow exhaust, both done my previous owner.
Actually here diesel is $3.97, which is about 4-6 cents cheaper than premium for my other car...
Tyler: I get between 20-21 mpg on the highway at 70 mph (look at my sig for truck config and mods). I also use synthetic oil and a fuel additive that I believe help the mileage. The trick is to keep the rpms no higher than 2000 for best mileage. Once you go above 2000 rpm, the mileage starts to drop.
As far as the chip question, if you're just driving highway unloaded, you probably don't need or want it. But it's really personal preference. If you do decide to get one, I'd recommend an SCT with custom tunes from Eric at Innovative Diesel or Matt at Spartan (based on the feedback I've read on this site). That's what I plan to do sometime in the future. If you do go chip, I wouldn't do it before I upgraded the exhaust to a 4 inch turbo back and got an EGT guage.
As far as a highway gear, 3.73 is the tallest gear that comes in these trucks stock and should be easy to find. I'm not sure if anyone makes one taller but keep in mind the effective ratio is much lower due to the rolling diameter of the tires.
Oh yeah, before you buy a used 6.0 get the VIN and then go down to the 2003-2007 6.0 PSD forum down below and post the VIN in the OASIS request thread pinned to the top of the forum. Someone will run your VIN in short order and get you the info on all dealer work (warantee and standard work) performed on that particular truck. Very helpful in making an informed decision. There are some problem children out there and this is your best means of avoiding one.
Its possible to get 20mpgs at 70 mph. The tires cant be big though. When i put 35's on my truck, it went from 20mpg at 70 to 17.5. Keep them tires close to stock and it can be done. Best i ever did was 21.3mpg hand calculated! 593 miles and put 27.8 gallons back in. Oh i miss those days. That was running 285/70/17 bfg all-terrains max inflated and Spartan's general economy tune. It can be done running 70!
ok, so i see that some people are saying tunes from certain people...
i always thought you just buy a tuner (hypertech) and plug it up...
like the Bullydog programer or the Edge Juice Kit... thats what i always thought you did, just buy it, follow the prompts, and cut her loose...
i really dont know much about electronics on cars, im used to good ole muscle...lol
so, would 33x12.50/20's set me back on fuel milage much do you think??
by the way POWERSTROKE_WANNABE, thanks for the tip, i will post my VIN when i find a good prospect to buy...
i have to sell my car first...never thought it would be that dang hard to sell a 4cyl 6 speed car with gas like it is...lol
also POWERSTROKE_WANNABE, what fuel additive do you use??
if i have to sing the barney theme song, standing on the toolbox, while pumping fuel to get better milage...well if i had to do that, i think i would just pay more for fuel, but you get my point...lol
I use Opti-Lube XPD (only available through their web site, I think). I use it primarily for its lubrication properties to keep the fuel pump and injectors happy but it also provides a Cetane boost (similar to octane boost for gassers). These engines love Cetane and run better with higher Cetane. The XPD is pricey but I think it's a good product. However, many on this site also use Diesel Kleene by Power Service. The DK is available at Wally World and is less expensive.
