So, school me on the plug issue please.

Hi all,

Long time member looking into getting a new truck.

Looking at a Ford 4x4 ext cab. have not decided on engine. or even 1/2 or 3/4 ton. open to all.

From what I have read on here the 4.6 is in the clear with plug issues? true or false.
the 5.4 has the issues and it was fixed for the 02+ true or false?

and then that the 03+ has some other plug issue? true or false.

Or should I go 7.3 powerstroke?

I am not going to tow with the truck, except the rare small trailer.
It will be a daily driver.

Just want to clear this up because I am reading mixed things.

My dad has the F350 with the diesel and 200k, not really any trouble, what would you all recommend?

I am looking to spend up to 13k tops.

Thanks.

The 97 through late 02 46.L, 5.4, and 6.8L all run the risk of blowing a plug out. These engines use aluminum heads and only about 1/2 the threads in the head as the 03 and 04 heritage model trucks. In my opinion the plugs should be changed every 50k miles (use Motorcraft) and need anti-seize and need to be torqued to 14/15 ft. lbs. which some people don't do.
I have almost 150k trouble free miles on my 97 F150 5.4L, but I'm **** about maintenance clean filters and fluids (even brake fluid). Some of the posters here have way more miles than I do without problems.
If you go with a diesel my recommendation would be an 03 7.3L about the only common problem they have (if filters and fluids used are high quality and kept clean) is the CKP which can be changed on the side of the road if need be.
Good luck on your choice.

I'm thinking if you want a heavy 1/2 Ton or 3/4 Ton, I suggest a 7.3. Sounds like you want "much-truck. Are you towing a load? If you tow at all, I'd go 7.3, durabilty!

Thanks for the help guys,

So, the 03-04 has more threads then? I heard the 05+ has some sort of plug issue as well?

I am thinking about the diesel, what about the 99-01 ages of 7.3's as that is the price range I have seen I would probably fall in.

Thanks.

'03's have 8 threads pre '03 have 4. The change was made somewhere during the '03 MY.

The first year or two of the 3V's ('04+ 5.4L) the plugs would get stuck in the heads.
