[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Jun-02 AT 06:19 PM (EST)]i was under my truck today and decided to scrape all the lose rust off my frame with a brush and scaper.I was wondering what i should paint on my frame to keep rust away.my friend told me to get a few cans of black rustoleum(or however you spell it).would that work or is there something better than that?thanks
I would suggest a rust-conversion/sealer product. Like the Eastwood Corroless rust convertor myself, but there are several others that do the same thing. I think all will hold up much better over the long run as compared to painting.
We have a product called x-o rust. Thick and dosen't chip easily. I belive that it was made for heavy duty appiactions bcasue the colors we have the most of are a john Deere green and yellow and then case red and a few other colors. Made for frames it seems. Try it out
I've been using por-15 on the underside of my truck. I tried their starter pack and I've had pretty good results as far as adhesion, looks, and longevity thus far. I'm considering buying some more and finishing the job, but the stuff is kind of expensive if you ask me. If I decide to go that route, I hope it lives up to all of the claims. This might be a question for a different forum, like bodywork or something, but I'll ask anyways. Anybody have any thoughts/experiences on the product?

POR-15! That's all ya need! I love that stuff. It worked awesome on my truck and looks great! It is also hard as a rock and is easier than crap to put on! It didn't take very long at all and ya don't have to do excessive sanding. Just get the really loose stuff off. Hope this helps!

By the way, I bought a quart I believe and it was plenty! You have no reason to buy a gallon unless you plan on painting a barn. And a few more tips. If you don't use it all at once, put a piece of plastic in between the lid and can when ya put the lid back on or ya can't get it off and make sure its closed! Some people say to use a sponge brush...nah. They tear up. Just use a regular brush and make sure to use THIN coats. Two will be plenty! GOOD LUCK!
use disposable brushes...be easier...2" works the best. Check out the bill hirsch auto paint...that stuff is really good. I've never heard of that other stuff before. This paint is really hard, and is a permanate cure for rust. You don't have to sand very much, just get the flaky stuff off.

hey guys, i recently sanded and painted my frame with rustoleum black. It looks really nice, but for some reason I dont think its gonna hold up when I start taking it out on the trails. I would like to buy Por-15, but here is my question...can i apply Por-15 over my already painted frame, or do i have to sand it down, or strip the paint off?
thanx for the help
gabriel
You can paint por-15 over rust w/o any prep. But paint...I am not quite sure. POR stands for Paint Over Rust. You may have to strip it off. I put just a lil bit of rustoleum on the from b4 i painted it in a lil spot (not sure why) and when i painted it on, it smeared the paint around. Quite weird.
This is from the faq section on the por-15 website.
"CAN I APPLY POR-15 OVER OTHER PAINTS?
Yes, but you will lose the important benefits of POR-15. You must remember that ordinary paints are weakened by exposure to moisture. POR-15 can't stop rust if it isn't in direct contact with the base metal."
This still leaves me a bit confused. Is this saying that it can't STOP rust that is already there from spreading or it can't prevent future rust from forming? They claim that moisture can't get through their product, so I'd like to think that the moisture would still never actually make it to the base metal if por-15 was applied over paint. However, this may not be the case. Maybe por-15 has to be in contact with bare metal in order to completely "set-up", I don't really know. I've used it over top of paint before with no problems thus far. However, the areas I applied it to that had paint weren't areas that were rusting, I just wanted a good looking protective coat. Maybe the best thing would be to call the 1-800 # and get some clarification. If anybody does, please post what you find out.

I hope you checked out that bill hirsch stuff, that stuff is very good, i've painted two of my trucks with it now. It will fade a little, but its tough as nails against scratchs and is inpervious to road salt, many other chemicals, and even Dot 3 brake fluid, and if u've ever had brake fluid on paint, you know the consiquences. I dont know about the por-15 stuff, but it still is paint, if you scrape it real hard on a rock you will scrape it off, but what other paint won't do that? Just check it out if u havn't already . This stuff isn't very well known, so i dont think many people have used it. The guys on the Trucks! tv show on TNN use it all the time, thats where i got it from.

ok, I wrote Por-15 and they said it is best not to use it over paint. Ofcourse they also said to buy the whole Por-15 prep kit, and then the actual Por-15 paint. I do not have anymore rust on my frame because I ospho'd it, and sanded it down to the metal. I just think the rustoleum paint will eventually fade and scratch when i start off-roading with the truck...this is the reason im interested in Por-15. I will probably give the frame a light sand then use the Por-15. I'll let u know how it went. I will probably order the Por-15 this weekend!
