i took my 78 F150 4x4 wheelin' and the axles/diffs got the crap beat out of 'em. I want to put some kind of skid plate under the axle to protect the diff, shock mounts, and drive shaft. I'd like to fabricate them myself but haven't seen any that cover the whole axle. I was actually thinking of using a leaf spring held to the axle tubes w/u-bolts, and welding a short piece of steel comming off the front of it to cover the diff.
Anyone have any other ideas on materials or designs? Have any of you made your own skid plates?
az4x4f150 is selling one that he made that covered the entire front of his truck,he has a 70's 4x4 so you could prob buy his his, i think he said he would just give it away
My buddy got some super heavy duty convaer belts and cut them and hung it from the frame down to the and mounted it to the axle this way when the suspension went up it would flex with it the stuff was an inch thick and it worked great stuff just slid underneath and it really protected you axle lighter than steeland if you go to a gravel pit when they own a crusher they always have the ##### just sitting there i know i used to work on a crusher crew and they will just give it to you.
Thanks guys. I contacted az4x4f150 and am waiting for a reply.
As for the conveyor belt idea, that sounds great. My brother can get me tons of that stuff for nothing. It would sure be easier to work with than steel. I'm thinkin' you could even wrap the axle to protect the brake lines and everything. Something to do this weekend.
