Ranger 4x4 question
Hi ford people I am driving a 99 ford ranger 4X4. when I turn the 4x4 switch on to engage the 4 wheel drive it lights up but the front axles don't engage. Where do I start. It just quit working one day and it is getting close to winter. Any Ideas?

Have you checked to see if the transfer case is locking in 4 w d?..try turning the front drive shaft ..

One other thing you might try, it might be that your auto locking hubs are gummed up...you can try using a rubber mallet and gently tapping around the hubs while trying to engage the 4x system...might be a quick fix for now, but an indication you need to do some maintinance to the hubs -

Your '99 Ranger uses a "pulse vacuum hublock" (PVH) 4WD system which is prone to problems, particularly hub engagement issues.

There are now manual locking hubs available (AVM) which many PVH Ranger owners have converted to with good success.
