we had an idiot on the town highway crew that thought he'd put piano wire on his town owned trimmer. hit a guard rail wire, broke off a piece of the piano wire and it cost him an eye

You can lose an eye even with unmodified units. I use a non modified spool and safety glasses along with long pants. I look like the jolly green giant when I'm done.
