A good friend has a 6.4 that doesn't pull well and gets poor mileage. When he first got it he could get 12-13 mpg running empty. Now it has dropped to 10-12.
The performance pulling his 5er is also poor. It is 10-15 mph slower on the hills than his '06 Dmax was. I towed with him last weekend. We have similar trailers, his being slightly heavier. On one long hill at lower elevation my V10 was walking away from him. As elevation increased and the gasser was gasping for air, he head a slight advantage.
He has had the rig to two dealers. They both claim nothing is wrong. There is no soot in his tailpipe. Does anyone have any ideas to what can be causing his problems??
Well what rear end does he have in his truck?. What cab configuration? I guess the only way you would really know is to have another truck the same configuration pull the same trailor up a long hill an see if theres any difference. These trucks do regenerate which you will lose some power when that happens. Puzzling problem isnt. May be when its broke in it will get better. Try another dealer if all else fails. Until your dissatisfied. Good Luck
It is a F350, SRW, CC, LB. Has 3.73 gears and the 20 in rubber. Seems like everyone else local with similar rigs has more power, though maybe not better mileage. Also doesn't seem to make sense that his unloaded mileage has dropped.
I have a almost identical truck as your friend, same everything but mine is a larait.
I have the exact same trouble with mine. I have had 2 diffrent ford techs look at it and been told the same thing. "man your truck is by far the worst 6.4 weve ever drove". I too have been tild there is nothing wrong and what it is is what it is.
Since Ford is dumping Navistar, is it plausible that they are purposely making schiznit engines? This is the second thread about 6.4 problems today. The other problem being a dilution problem. It's dumping a quart of fuel into the oil over 5000 miles. This would seriously limit engine life.

Starting to get nervous about my new one.
No, that is not what is going on. Some motors do develop problems though and generally you hear about them on sites like this.

Thanks. It seems more happy than sad stories about the 6.4. I loved the ones I have driven. It seems like the updated flash helps out a ton of these problems.
Was the same way over on the F150 forum, everyone would flip out when a few people would have serious problems with their trucks. A handful of poorly performing trucks out of how ever many 2008 super duties have been built, 500K, 600K?? Mass produced, assembly line vehicles, a few are going to be bad...Doesn't mean there is a problem with the truck. Maybe buy a hand-built Ferrari if you want to be 100% sure of the quality. For $50K there isn't as much quality assurance.
Realistically, your buddy should be on this site asking questions instead of you. With that said, the only issue I have had with power and mpg is when the regen hits and I am towing. It has not happened for a while but I definitely was not happy. As for power vs. a v10, are your trucks set up exactly the same? Does he have 37" tires on those 20"s while you are running 16" with 285's? Thats the info I would want to know.
You are right that he should be here, but he seems to think that all that is here is BS.
Both rigs are 08s. My V10 has 4.30 gears with the stock 18 in tires. His 6.4 has 3.73 gears with the stock size 20 in rubber. So the tires are close but the gears are the biggest difference.
We both traded in Dmaxes for these Fords. He was a Ford man without a Ford and I was ready for a change. Both of the Dmaxes we had would have made his 6.4 look like it was a kids toy as far as power. I have actually been impressed with the V10 now I seem to have the bugs out. It does what I expected.
Nice response and thank you for the clarifications. I mostly said that to test the waters and see if you were a duramax guy looking to stir the pot. As I said in my post, the 6.4 should have more pull than the V10 unless in Regen, then the thing is a turd in my experience. I just am not going to modify mine until it is out of warranty. With 28,000 on it I only have about 2 more years to go.
Gears coud make the difference in towing for sure. "Kid's toy?" I doubt that... But I am thinking about the DPF delete after hearing all the regen stories.
"a duramax guy looking to stir the pot." Naw......Not that I wouldn't but I've had enough fun at my buddies expense on this one. His 6.4 is stronger that the V10 but not much. Mileage isn't much better either. Hopefully it will get better with more miles.
I agree with you on the gears JT but with the 3.73s I would think he would see better mileage empty.

well, I just got back from a camping trip, well over 200 miles up and down mountain, running 70 mph, pulling 7500 lbs trailer plus all the bikes and everything else. Went into regen once and did not notice anything other than the fact in said "cleaning exhust filter". No change in power.
Mine is a job 3 08 F250 PSD auto 4x4 with 3.73's
Got 9.23 mpg think it will get better as only had 1900 miles on it. I know the minute I un-hook MPG's shot up to 18!
