Wipers finally fixed

My multi-function switch has been acting up for months on my 2000 Expy but I kept putting off fixing it until I recently broke the end of the gearshift lever off (the overdrive button). I figured I could kill two birds and fix them both.

The job went pretty easy and I was able to replace the gearshift lever (the hardest part was disconnecting/reconnecting the wires under the dash).

I took the multi-function switch out and decided to take it apart. It did have some corrosion on the contacts inside so I decided I could clean it up instead of buying a new one(~$100).

I carefully cleaned and polished all of the contacts inside, lightly regreased them and put it back together. Installed it back on the truck and reassembled the steering column covers, ignition switch, tilt lever, reconnected the battery and started the truck and the wipers were going full speed again.

So today I went and bought a new multi-switch for $95 from the stealer, put it on and it finally works like it should.

The job isn't that hard and can be done in minutes once you've done it a few times.

I was only able to disassemble the base of the multi-switch, my problem must have been inside the arm part of it. I didn't see a way to take that apart without destroying it....which I will do now.

Once you get it apart, pictures of the insides would be nice.

I did take pictures as I disassembled the M-F switch, something I learned from cleaning guns and fishing reels....take pix or video as you work

I've never posted pics before, but will give it a try. These pics aren't the best ... I couldn't quite figure out the Macro mode on the camera.

I will try to take a few pics of the demon multi-switch now that it is cleaned up too.

I hope this helps.

These pix are after I cleaned the contacts inside the multi-function switch. I still would try and clean it up and re-install it before I pay $100 for a new one.

You really can remove this in minutes once you've done it before. Be careful when undoing the wires connected to the back of the switch, the grey connectors are a litlle tricky to unsnap and it would be easy to break one.

I took a pic of the gearshift lever I snapped too.

Very nice, thanks for posting. I sometimes find it interesting to look inside broken parts just to see where the weak point was. In the case of this switch, it was interesting to see the different wear patterns on different contacts.
