I was getting started tonight on doing a front brake job and "guzzle's needle bearing lube on my '01 PSD 4x4 F250. I thought I would spray some PB Blaster on the lock nuts holding the hub onto the knuckle and let them soak over night. Anyway, while doing that I notice a piece of rubber from the seal on the back side of the hub that is just hanging on the knuckle. It looks like an 3-4" "O" ring but I'm pretty sure it is part of the seal from the back of the hub. It is there on both the driver's and passenger side of the truck.
Anyone else seen this? And if so, do I have a bigger project on my hands.
If you have ESOF you will probably want to replace that seal, if you have manual 4x4 then it's probably not a big issue. Got a pic of what you're talking about just to be sure?
mines hangin too... been hangin for 2 years or better now. I havent seen it affect anything, but i have manuals too. Hope this doesnt turn out to be something bad
That's the outside ring on the dust boot, and it's no big deal, I have had them fall off of the seal within a year of installing them, it doesn't seem to affect seal longevity.
It must be tough living in Manhatten, KS with a nickname like Husker.
I also noticed when I was under the truck that I'm going to have to do a POR treatment or something else on the engine pan. It is starting to get rust bubbles. I don't even live in the "rust belt." The pans on my 64 T bird and rust bucket 78 Bronco look better than the one on an "01" Super Duty. Just another rant on a common problem.
