I have a 2001 F350 PSD Lariat (4x4). It's an automatic w/ 120K miles. It's not shifting properly. It goes all the way to the redline without changing gears. If I let the rpms drop it will shift (sometiems). I noticed the overdrive 'off' light will blink too.
What's wrong? Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.
sounds like your tranny might be puking out on you. might be time for a rebuild. how does the tranny fluid look and smell? someone will come along shortly (hopefully) and get you on the right track.
Mark will tell you, looking and smelling the ATF on our trucks is worthless. It isn't the same old trans fluid that this used to work on. The only way to tell if it is bad is to get it analyzed.
You can try changing out the fluid and it might fix the problem. You might also want to look into the problems people have had with the VSS and overdrive on/off button as they both can cause erratic transmission problems and a blinking light.
If none of that seems to take care of the problem then you might have to start looking into rebuilding/replacing the trans. You wouldn't be the first guy to have to do this on an earlier Super Duty. I would start by trying the cheap stuff first though.

I own a 02 F-350 that had 79K when I bought it used three years ago.
I had just driven it for a few days and the same O/D light started blinking and I took it to dealership and they diagnosed it as a bad Torque convertor. I paid $100 deductible for the Ford ESP warranty and they repalced the T/C. One day later, the O/D light began blinking again, took it back and they rediagnosed it as bad Solenoids in valve body. Replaced them N/C ($0.00) same issue, differents parts. I now have 130K and no major issues. I do need to repalce fluid.
I would find a reputable IN transmission shop and have them diagnose the truck for you
It sounds to me like another failed mechanical diode. That means a rebuild, and the replacement of many parts that normally are reused in a rebuild. It can cost anywhere from $1500 to $5000, depending on who's doing it, what parts they use, and what needs to be replaced.
I just received word from the transmission shop that 2nd gear is completely gone. The transmission needs to be rebuilt. He's given me an estimate of $1800-$2400. This includes some upgraded parts. He won't know actual costs until it's torn down. He provides a 12 month warranty on all parts & labor (is this standard?).
Any other issues or concerns while/when the tranny's apart? Anything I should address with my mechanic prior to completeion.
