I just installed a new left front assembly. Seems to have fixed my problem. However when i was working on it I noticed the front drive axle is spinning. I have it in 2wd and the hubs are in auto. Should'nt it Not be spinning ? then spin when I enguage the 4wd. thanks jeff
one more question, auto/lock hub also (used from ebay). I havent tried my 4wd as yet but, if it dosent work then it would be a vaccuum leak correct?. Also the right side is frozen and i was going to try to rebuild the extra hub I now have. Now if I decide to go with manual Warn Hubs how does the 4wd work from inside the cab. Do I still have 4wd low and 4wd high? I fogure i have to stop the truck to enguage and disenguage like my old truck used to have. then I would get in the truck and flip the switch to 4 low or high right? And if i plug off the vaccuum line this will cure the problem i hope. Does this vaccuum line operate any other stuff or just the 4wd ? thanks jeff
When you say front drive axle, do you mean the axle shaft coming out from the diff or the drive shaft coming from the T-case to the axle? In 2wd nothing should spin- when I did my ball joints I realized the PO had left the stock hubs in LOCK and after moving to AUTO everything was still turning- I had to rotate the hub forward then backward quickly to get it to disengage.
If you swap hubs you will still have 4H and 4L, just do like you said. Yes, just plug the vacuum lines and you're done.
If the 4x4 doesn't seem to be working, turn on your A/C and if it's blowing out the defrost vents there is a vacuum problem.
... what was spinning? The stub-axle in your front housing? How did you test that? Give us more info.
In my experience the vacuum hubs are crap, work ok as manual hubs but din't last long as vacuum operated ones. And if your anything approaching serious about your 4x4, I'd ditch them and get real hubs. (Warn is a great start)
while i was removing my front tire to change out the hib assembly I noticed the front axle going to the front pumpkin was turning when i turned the wheel, So my question was id this supposed to be spinning when i spin the front wheel freely. My hub are stuck in the auto mode for the 4 wd but I have it in 2wd 99 % of the time. I just replaced one auto hub that now works however the left side is still frozen. thanks jeff

In "auto" setting on your hub, if your axle is spinning like you described, you have a hub that is not disengaged. I was able to reach around through the wheel well, grab the axle shaft, twist it back and forth while turning the hub selector from auto to lock. If your hub won't turn from auto to lock and back, you can remove and clean per these directions:
