tach?
i have an 85 6.9 and i have the plug for a tach but i have no tach... if i got the unit that runs off of the gear could i run just a regular car tach or do i have to get a dash from a manual to get the pre installed tach?

On the 85 if your truck does not have a tach, you do not have the right printed circuit on the back of the cluster to run a tach.
Best solution is swap clusters, put your speedo in the new cluster so the odometer mileage is right.

And since no one answered, no you can't use a gasser tach, it has to be from a diesel. And you can use the stock "board" from a non tach dash, you just need to run your own wires. There's a post somewhere that shows how to do it, very easy.
