got to pull them to replace my fly wheel. was wondering can i do this on my own. it is coming of a 79 4x4 lifted up, so getting under it is no problem. it is a 205 transfer with a 4 speed . what steps should i do taking it off? i have drained all the oil's, and taken the shifter out of the tranny. this is looking like a big job to me. need some good infor guys. thank every one who has given me all the great input in the past.
yard_dawg, Is it a 3/4 or 1/2 ton. it's a lot easier on the F250, because no radius arm brackets to mess with. On a 1/2 ton, to make it easier i would split the t-case off the transmission. Drain the t-case, but not the trans. You might be able to get the trans out without removing the crossmember, but it will be tight, better get a friend to help. if you end up pulling the crossmember, ( I ran into this on mine) there might be two sort of hidden small bolts on top of the frame rail in the middle of the two outer bolts. I guess they were to hold the crossmember inplace at the assembly line?? if you have these middle bolts they are a beach! because of the lack of clearance frame to body. Good Luck
id get a buddy to help them things are beefy, use jacks to support tranny or t case and drop the drive shafts off, then work on tcase, tranny and their cross member bolts, wiggle the cross member free from the tranny and the frame and scoot the tcase and tranny backward on the jack, use another 1 or 2 jacks to support them just as a percaution. its the way i did mine and seemed easier than dropping stuff all the way to the ground and having to lift them back in place or pulling the motor. but friends can help out alot in this process also
My friend and I did this in january when it was about 20 degrees outside, his driveway was gravel and we worked mostly in the dark due to our work schedules, we were both 16 at the time and it took us about 4 nights putting in a couple hours every night. It sucked bad. But you should be able to handle it, I will warn you that the trans and transfer case seperated each weigh more than a sack of dead mimes, don't try to lift them by yourself...
i am in the process now of separating the transfer from the tranny. going to take the transfer cross member out then drop the case, next i will take the tranny out. it is in a 1/2 ton also.
