Just bought another 70 series truck, this one is alittle worse of than the other one i bought. Heres the problem all stickers under the hood point to a 429-4v but the manuals i have say that it was not an option, were there 429's put into this great line of trucks and if it's not a 429 how do i tell what engie it really is? The vin code suggests its a 360 but how can i identify it for sure?
NumberDummy (Bill) is on vacation for a couple weeks.
no a 429 would not have been in a truck. if the vin says 360 and that's the orignal vin tags that came with the truck then yes the 360 came with the truck. it is very likely that the engine was swapped in when the 360 was tired. to tell if it's a 429 for sure you can count the number of valve cover bolts. I'm not sure how many for each engine. search the forums and you'll come up with something.
70 series........this forum is only from 73-79, what year truck did you buy?
I do not currently have any pics, but I will post them tommorrow after I take some( I bought it at an auction so i havent been able to bring it home yet ( it doesn't run yet) I should be able to bring it home tommorrow, but we'll see)
Yes i have the VIN its listed as a 1975 F250 The vin decoder on this site says <TABLE style="BORDER-RIGHT: #990000 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #990000 1px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #990000 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #990000 1px solid" width=600 align=center itxtvisited="1"><TBODY itxtvisited="1"><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD style="PADDING-LEFT: 55px" colSpan=2 itxtvisited="1">Your Model Year is July 1974.</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD bgColor=#0099cc colSpan=2 height=1 itxtvisited="1"></TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD style="PADDING-LEFT: 15px" width="40%" itxtvisited="1">Truck Series:</TD><TD itxtvisited="1">F250 2 Wheel Drive</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD bgColor=#0099cc colSpan=2 height=1 itxtvisited="1"></TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD style="PADDING-LEFT: 15px" itxtvisited="1">Engine:</TD><TD itxtvisited="1">V8 - 360cid, 2BBL carb</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD bgColor=#0099cc colSpan=2 height=1 itxtvisited="1"></TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD style="PADDING-LEFT: 15px" itxtvisited="1">Assembly on:</TD><TD itxtvisited="1">Kansas City, MO</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
The Valve cover bolt count is seven (three top four bottom) the other posts indicated that the 429/460 had seven valve cover bolts, but i have not been able to find any info on the difference between the two motors except the stroke. is there any more information i might be missing to identify the difference between the two?
you can get the stroke with a coat hanger . bend the hanger straight, take out a spark plug, insert hanger into spark plug hole, turn the engine over by hand.
What letters are stamped on the head above #2 or 3 or #6 or 7 exhaust ports? They might say something like D0VE or D3VE. Id bet someone swapped this motor out of an old 429 T-bird. Do the valve covers say "ThunderJet"?
