OK so my wife just took the 04 Ex in for the free oil change at the dealership. It has 42k on it, and we bought it used back in the spring w/ 39 k. 4.6 Limited. So I tell her to get them to do the tranny flush/fill and filter since Ford didn't exactly make it easy for me to do this. She calls me later in the day when she picks it up and tells me they did the F&F but didn't do the trans filter. WTF? I get home, call the dealer and the service mgr tells me when they backflush the fluid it cleans the filter and they only replace filters if they're doing an overhaul, otherwise they don't drop the pan. I say OK its their dime if it takes a crap and they have to rebuild/ replace a tranny. She only puts @ 7k a year on her car and we got the extended warranty when we bought it. So that's @ 2 weeks ago. I drive it the other night to go pick up my son and I notice a "flutter" in the 2-3 shift. Hmm... maybe it's just me. I go thru the gears again. Same thing. Now it doesn't do it every time and mostly under partial throttle. Oasis had replaced 2nd gear solenoid pack before we bought it, but that was 3 yrs ago. What am I looking at before I call the dealer tomorrow? Should I expect problems with it doing this? It sure ain't right anyways. TIA -Tim
My guess is you're looking at another solenoid pack replacement. I had mine done under ESP 3 months ago and I insisted the filter be changed; cost me $33 on top of the $50 deductible.
I don't know what they put in. They're a Ford dealer, so I HOPE they would've put the correct fluid in it. I don't recall seeing anything on the receipt, maybe I should check again.
I have a 99 explorer, 4.0 liter v-6 with the 5r55e trans. It slips while in drive while initially trying to take off. it'll rev high like it's in neutral then suddenly grab like a tranny drop. it'll go just fine when in 1st on the column and drives fine in all other gears. Clutch packs? Solenoid? IDK
Update: So it goes in Mon. I drove it last night and it has gotten much worse. From park it slams into reverse, shifts erratically, seems to slip and really hits hard when it shifts. The " check trans light" came on for a bit while my wife was driving it today. Hopefully it makes it to the dealer without crapping out completely. I will have to have a chat w/ the service mgr as I don't think I should have to pay the deductible since it shifted fine before we took it for the flush/ fill. I'll keep you posted.
a drain and refill is good. a flush and refill has to be wathed. if they do a "power flush" you can dislodge old crud and lining material setting in the crevisis and push it into the valve body or main line after the filter where it can do more damage "after" startup. i dont believe in the power flush, just drain/change the oil and filter on mine.
If the genius engineers would've given the Explorer a normal set-up I would have done just that- a drain and filter/fill. I just did my truck a month ago. However, that is what they gave me for a trans service at the dealer, and thank the Big Guy upstairs we bought the ext. warranty. My wife is going to handle this with the dealer, and hopefully they continue to treat her as well as they have and I won't have to pay the service mgr a visit.
Dropped it off Sunday, seems they're rebuilding the tranny. Supposed to be done this afternoon, will post the findings after I get the work order. I'm not totally upset that I will have a freshly rebuilt tranny but it only has 42k on it. Makes me wonder...
Well, the 5r55e transmission has a lot of issues. I am not impressed with the pulsating solenoids to create controlled slip, and I am not impressed with the side load on the clutch solenoids. I mean really, if it pulsates and has side load, with a steel shaft in an aluminum housing, what do you think will happen. It will wear into the side of the bore. When enough wear occurs, strange things start happening as the fluid starts leaking out.
OK heres the list: Kit-gasket,screen assy, Solenoid assy, plate-thrust, 2 different piston/rod part #'s,band assy,ring-retain.,hub-ring gear, ring gear, fluid, gasket. Basically rebuilt the tranny the SM told me. 12 mo/ 12k warranty, but I still have @ 2.5 years on the ext. warranty, and YES, Steina, I'm certainly glad we bought the ext. warranty! Hopefully she's good to go now!
