transmission question

I found a 97 f150 4x4 tranny with 10,000 miles on it. It is a automatic. Here is the question. Can you change the tail of the trany and output shaft with a 2wd tail? I know you can do this with chevy just woundering.

Yes, but it requires taking the transmission totally apart. The tail shaft is the first piece (basically) to go into the transmission case. I assume it is the same on Chevies. I would not know.

The tail housing just bolts on later.

No I do not, specifically.

Some of the ATSD manuals might show the two different shafts.

ATSG - Automatic Transmission Service Group

I cannot recall. It has been years since I was inside one. If it were me....I would look for a 2WD one and just rebuild it myself. You have to take it apart anyway...in fact you would be taking two of them apart (at the same time). Could get messy and confusing.

If you would rather find a junk one and buy the good one..then take them both apart and make one out of it...then you might contact ATSG and ask if your particular book shows the two shafts.

Yes, you can do it. But the trans has to be completely taken apart. GM trannies are the same way. As someone mentioned earlier, the output shaft (and output ring gear) is the first component to go into the case during an overhaul. It slides in through the front of the case. I would not advise you to take this on unless you are very mechanically inclined and have a good service manual or repair book. Also, transmission work requires a bit of "feel" that you cannot get from a book. ATSG has good manuals for transmission repair. You should be able to find them on the internet.

I think you're talking about an E4OD?

yes it has to come apart to do that.

You have several options with that trans. Mine came out of an F-450 with a 7.3L N/A diesel.

I wanted to use an adapter ( so a friend who is also a trans rebuilder found me a small block/300 style case and swapped all the internals over to the smaller bell-housing case. I also required the tail mounted parking brake (which bolts where a transfer case mounts) and he got me one of those too.
( Pics in my gallery)

If you're going to use a Y-block (like I am) you'll need a trans controller. If you use the engine out of a newer truck you may be able to use the Ford controller.

Built right the E4OD is basically "bullet proof"

Cheers,

Rick
