fuel pressure drain off
I have a 1999 Ranger, 2.5, 2 wd, 118" wb, std cab, approx. 50K miles, auto W/OD. Vin 1FTYR10C5XUB22431.
Problem: When the truck sits several hours the fuel pressure in the injector rail drains off ( no "spit" from the schrader valve ). To start the truck three key on - then off then crank and it starts on the first rev. Electrical is OK.
Questions:
1) Is there a fuel pressure regulator some where out side of the gas tank ??
I can not find a fuel return line from the engine to the fuel tank.
2) Is there some way to isolate the problem among Injectors, pressure regulator and check valve in the fuel pump ??
3) When looking for parts on internet I see " VIN (c)". What is this all about ??
4) Is there an aftermarket fuel filter with a built in check valve ??
5) Is there any particular problems with replacing the fuel pump ?? I am thinking removal of the tank from under the truck. I have a shell and a bed liner installed.
(( For some reason a previous attempt to post this note did not seem to take. If this is redundant -- Sorry ))

(1) there is no return line running back to the fuel tank from the fuel rail;
(2) designed to operate at higher fuel pressure - 65psi is dead on correct;
(2) the fuel pressure regulator is now in the fuel tank with the pump, not on the fuel rail.
The check valve is also in the tank with the pump assembly.
Fuel pressure specs for non-FFV returnless systems are 64psi +/- 8psi.
The fuel system is not designed to hold pressure for several hours. However, pressure should remain within 5 psi of the maximum reading for at least 1 minute after the fuel pump is turned off.
Is there anything particularly tricky in replacing the pump assembly from below the truck ?
