My Dad has a 96 F150, 302, 4x4 supercab loaded, every factory option except limited slip rearends. (55,000 miles). He has a chance to trade up to a 98 2x4 with 4.2L six, supercab XLT with 3.08 rear (35,000 miles). All he has to pay is sales tax ($700) and trade the old truck. His main motivation is two years newer, less miles and hopefully better gas mileage plus better color and seats. He pulls a 3000 pound fishing boat. He lives up north and is trying to stay ahead of salty road rust.
How is that new V6? What kind of real mileage can they get?
Would you trade? I think I heard go with the V-8 for more grunt and just as good of gas mileage. Thanks for any information.
I have the same truck and I tow a fishing boat. The boat is not as heavy as your dads. I get around 14 with town driving and some road driving. Towing my boat I get 11. It tows my boat Ok but I am leary about towing the 3000 lbs. From what I have heard about gas milage difference betwenn the V6 and V8 , I wish I would have at least got the 4.6. I am very happy with my truck and the V6 with my towing needs but not much extra there in case it is needed.
--The 4.2L is a pretty good motor from what I've heard. Pretty reliable.
What kind of real mileage can they get?
--I've heard of close to 25mpg with a 5-speed and 3.08 gears. I consider that good. I would guess your's is around 20 or so.
Would you trade?
--No, I like the older trucks, but, from the statement's you've made, it sound's like heck of a deal. Have you or he driven it yet? You 302 has 205hp and 275ft/lbs of torque. That 4.2L also has 205hp with 250ft/lbs of torque.

--Most people do, just because it's a V-8. The 4.6L is a known engine. It started it's life in 1990 in the Lincoln Town car. It has 240hp and 290ft/lbs of torque now in 2001.
