I have and 01 F250 SD. It has 120K miles and has been taken care of. I noticed over the last few months that I am having to add oil between changes. I checked today and it is down about 3/4 from full after driving about 900 Miles. I have been pulling a trailer with about 8000lbs on it. The engine seems to run fine. Should I be worried, or is this normal and is there anything I can do?
While a somewhat, completely different animal. My '06, while moving a combined weight of 11,824lbs from VA to FLA on a fresh oil change. The truck used 3/4 of qt on the way down, and 3/4 of a quart on the way back up. That was with Mobil1 5W20. When I run Motorcraft SemiSyn 5W20, she uses about 2/3rds that amount.
I have about 47,500 miles on the odometer as well.
It will vary from truck to truck, my work truck I used to have (2000 V10) used a quart every 2000 from new and when I sold it with 99600 miles on it it still used the same amount. The only time it changed was when I had a problem PCV system. It was not the PCV valve but the air inlet on the left bank was leaking because the plastic fitting was cracked. Also check and make sure that the dip stick has a good seal, I would also replace the PCV valve just to make sure it's working properly. The 2000 V10 that I still have uses almost no oil and its been that way from new. I did have to add a quart on our Alaska trip this summer but that was after 5K of hard pulling.
Two things to say:
1) All engines will consume some oil if the cylinder walls and valve stems are getting properly lubricated. It varies from maybe 1/2 quart every few thousand miles to much more. Generally, most manufacturers say anything less than 1 quart every 500 or 1000 miles is nothing to worry about. I agree. It is annoying to have to add that much, but it doesn't hurt anything. So you are fine.
2) Depending on oil used, evaporation can be a factor as well. Yes, evaporation. Oil is a mixture of many, many different sized molecular chains (especially non-synthetics) and some of those molecules are somewhat volatile at elevated temperatures.
I have a 2001 V10 with 62,000 miles on it. It has run Motorcraft 5W20 blend in I bought it new in October of 2001. My motor uses about a quart every 3,000 miles. Slightly more if towing...
One thing I notice is when the truck sits for several days I get a "puff" of blue oil smoke out of the exhaust during startup. Otherwise the exhaust is clear.
My truck was bought in Anchorage, Alaska and spent it's break-in period during the winter months. For those who are also using oil, was your initial break-in during the cold months?
