There are a few instances when I am pretty sure the wife and kids wanted me dead!!!
There was the time I took the teenage daughter to the store for feminin products and made her go to the cute checkout boy AND asked if we kept the reciept can we bring them back if they don't fit???.........She didn't talk to me for awhile :-)
Then at wally world we were all up front by the registers and I hung back until they were clear accross the store and shouted in my best Goonies voice "HEY YOU GUYS, WAIT FOR ME, WAIT FOR ME!!!!!) hobbled accoss the store draggin one foot and head tilted to the side with my toung hangin out.
Then there was the time in the mall when the daughter (about 16 at the time) was chatting with some kid at the mall and I talked her little brother (about 8 at the time) to go up and say "mommy, when are we leaving" She turned a few different shades of red that day lol.
Well it must not have stunted my youngest any, he just gave me a note from his teacher. He had a field trip to the zoo today and his teacher wanted to tell me about it.
"Today at the zoo it was rather chilly, another boy didn't have his coat so Benny gave him his to wear for the day. He is one of the most polite kids in my class and this is not the first time he has showed another such kindness, You should be proud!!"
Man you know how to make a person in embarrassed. I would of disowned you for a little bit.
You want to hear something really funny, at the time I was so pissed off at him. I had a real hot date, he was from out of town 50 miles away. Came to the house to pick me up and dad was cleaning his shot gun and was putting it back together and asked him what time I will be home. He asked what time he should have me back. Dad said 9:00PM. I said dad we are going to the movies. Dad said 9:30. We had to leave at 9:00 to get me home by 9:30. We were only 5 minutes away from my house. No kiss, no hug, no holding hand at the movies. I was mad. Dad greeted us at the door and said that he could not take me out anymore. So what does a mad daughter do, give this cute guy a nice kiss. Dad got his gun and Curtis ran. Then on top of this I was grounded for 1 month. It was well worth it. What dads do sometimes, can make me mad. Now I can laugh at this.
You aint tellin me nothin I don't already know, I got 2 teenage daughters in the house and the whole boyfriend thing just irritates me but such is life. I don't threaten them at all, no shot guns, no threats. I just don't say anything but the occasional "huh" and that seems to scare the crap out of them. I have had my daughters mad at me before cuz thier boyfriends don't want to come over cuz "I scare them" lol. I have had to teach a few boyfriends a thing or two.
1 Don't be late, I don't sleep!!
2 Don't tell some sorry story about the battery bieng dead in the car and that is why your late, it just don't work when her dad is a mechanic!
And I had to teach one to NEVER EVER EVER hit a woman because her dad hits MUCH MUCH harder!
Yup, must be something about them that makes me bald and grey but I wouldn't trade them in for anything. I married into this familly and got the girls just as they started dating, just thrown right into it lol.
The other approach my dad used was come in boy we have to talk. Then sits him down and tells him about the birds and bees. Talk about embarrassing. Then tells them that if they do anything with his daughter, they won't live. Some just got up and walked right out the door with out my date. Look at dad and he is smiling from ear to ear.

It scares the girls to when the dad won't talk. So I can see the guys point.
As for you being a mechanic, my is one also. Don't use your lines. Instead of not sleeping, dads gives a hour after the time and then goes looking. Trust me NOT a good thing.
I don't recall of being hit, but I was a tom boy so I learn to hit back. Dad did say that if you hit a guy be prepared to get hit like a guy back.
My father in law was a great guy (RIP) but my mother in law... ugh... she actually called the sheriff on my wife because she wasn't home by 12 --- this was at a star watching party for an astronomy class, a school sponsored function -- when she was 19 years old. The party started at dark in July (10:00pm) and was 45 miles away. DUH... My parents never ever cared about what what time we got home, just the later we got in, the earlier we had to do chores in the morning.
I had the same experience with getting home late as you Flip. Getting home at 1:00 am meant a really early chore time the next morning. And if it was a saturday that meant you also did church for sure(although we usually went anyway).
When my daughters dated in high school, I always wanted to meet the boy and visit. I figured if he wouldn't visit a little bit, then he was probably up to no good. My daughters weren't really serious about boyfriends in high school. The youngest one we tease about being Baskin Robbins with the flavor of the week. She had lots of male friends, but if they actually dated it was the kiss of death for the friendship because she didn't date more someone more than once or twice.

My dad always knew when we went out drinking, I don't condone this. But dad always got me and my brothers up to do chores at 4:00 in the morning. I should not say got us up, I should say start the vacuum cleaner then. I think he just want to see if our heads would pop off. He would hide the advil or asprins. Talk about a nightmare. But I'm glad he did, because if it wasn't for him I would not be the lady I am today. At the time I was not happy.
That is as bad or worse than cultivating corn early in the morning before breakfast back in the early 60's before pre emergent herbicide. You had to cultivate when it was real small, so the tractor was in a low gear and at a fast idle. Nice and noisy diesel without a cab and lots of gear whine from the old Oliver rear end.
