I am new to the forums and am now a new owner of my first truck. I have a 1996 F250 351 4x4 w/ 122k on it. I have no idea what weight oil is in it now.
What weight oil do you guys think I should use in it? It was a work truck and is a bit tired but I am not using it for anything more than general use, maybe towing a light-weight boat at most. I do not believe it burns any (or much) oil.
Also, what type of gear oil should I use for the differentials?
At this point, I do not have much to contribute and will initially only ask a few stupid questions. I appreciate you patience.
Wrong. 5w30 can easily be used all year around, even in Washington.
Ford does not specify to use this oil in the summer, and that oil in the winter, ect.
Now if you live in an area that has -30,-40 frigid winter conditions, ect. it is advisable to use a lightweight synthetic oil.
Decades ago, when engine oil was mono-weights, it was advisable (and common practice) to use a 40HD wt in the summer, and a 30HD oil in the winter.
A good quality 5w30 oil is all your Ford needs, this oil pumps well when cold, delivers peak fuel mileage, will not burn off in high temperature / towing / stress conditions, is compatible with emission controls, engine seals and gaskets, and generally what your 351 was designed for by the Ford engineers/.
