I have an intermittent problem with driver’s side rear door in my 02 explorer. It has been in and out of the shop 5 times and they cannot fix it. They have replaced the rear actuator and the driver’s front door control panel but the problem still remains. Recently they took the door apart, adjusted and lubed everything but still no success.
Here is the problem, get up in the morning unlock the front door with the key and then press unlock on the drivers door switch. All doors unlock except for rear driver’s door. If you lock and unlock a few time you can usually get it to go. In addition, once the lock starts working, it works fine with successive locks and unlocks. If you let the car sit for while or after a drive it fails almost 90% of the time when you go to unlock. Note: it will fail in either direction after a period of inactivity.
I notice my 02 superduty has a similar issue. If the battery is not fully charged, the RR door lock will not cycle nicely. Try putting the truck on a battery charger, then working the locks. You battery could be old, or the wires have a bit of corrosion.
Check the rubber sleave in the drivers front door where all the wires run between the door and body for any breaks. We've had problems with wires in the door jam breaking. Try wiggling the sleave while operating the locks. If you can make it work/not while wiggling the rubber sleave, your problem will be in the wiring harness that runs through the door.
