i was told that replacing the original carb with a new aftermarket one would give you better fuel mileage. anyone here found that to be true? also, would a cheap plastic tarp work the same as an aftermarket bed cover? i was thinking about using bungie cords to keep it on.

Not sure about the truck, but swapping out the autolite 4300 in my '69 Thunderbird for a Holley has helped out a lot. You would have to put some bows under that tarp and strech it tight. It might just work then.

Hello,
The larger tires and low gear are probably killing your gas mileage. With the larger tires, the engine is having to do a considerable amount more of pulling.
I have a 1996 2wd with 2:73's and i get about 18 - 20 around town, and a little better on the road. So my point is, i don't think it is your "tuning" or anything like that. Just gearing and tires.

I have a 1995 f150 4X4 with a 4.9l inline 6. Manual trans 4 speed with O/D

I have replaced plugs, wires, rotor, rotor cap, fuel injectors (#6 was reading bad in ford diag. test), Exhaust (bigger size 3") , and went to free flow cat.

Still only get @15mpg combined. It was only getting 12 combined.

I have three more problems to take care of then I will test again.
Exhaust leak on manifold (maybe blown gasket)
O2 sensor replacement
Get rid of lift kit. Lift kit was partially removed. They only pulled off front when they replaced front end suspension components. So rear lift is still there. Lift is only a 2-3", but it might make a diff in aerodynamics.

Tires are larger then stock too.

That's probably all you can squeeze out of her. You've got alot of issues....four wheel drive, probably a high-number rear axle, bigger heavier tires, and the lift kit. You're lucky to have the OD to help out on the highway.
