Could be in trouble here... 250 Single to Dually

Yep did a search and surprisingly came up with not much. There was one thread involving yesterday but I didn't want to hi-jack that guys thread.

Any way, I'm thinking about doing a Dually swap on my '99. I don't want to do the spacer thing, for sure want the real McCoy here. But I do have some questions that I know some know of or perhaps have done it.

1. Are the spring perches in-fact the same distance apart?

2. I have over loads and air bag over loads... any problem there? I wouldn't think so but why not ask.

3. I would assume that I'm looking for a '99 to '03 axle? Or would other years work? I'd like the Dana 80 but would think that is pretty common.

4. I'd prefer to just keep my front the same. Do I have to change the front axle at all?

5. I run 295/75 R 16's. Is there a same size equivalent in a dually tire? Is the rim size a 16 or would only Out Side Diameter of the tire be what counts?

This about all I can think of right off hand so if any one does sport this knowledge and knows more then even this stuff please ad-lib. As always thank you all.

Dan

Oh yeah... My rig...

You will have to swap gears in one of the axles. F350 dually axle came with 4.10, Single rear wheel trucks came with 3.73's.
I believe the spring perches are the same, youll also need to get the front spacers and add dually wheels on the front to preserve the track of the truck.
the tires will work, but you will have to add spacers to the rear so the sidewalls dont rub eachother.

What looks really cool, is a normal front axle with a 10" wide wheel with a "float" style tire, just like the big dump trucks that run a wide float on the front. No need for the spacers, i would think. It would be more custom with stock backspacing front wheels and duallys out back.

Basically you would need to find a frontal-impact totaled dually, and take what you would need!

There is an easy two step process to get this done-

Step 1. Sell your truck
Step 2. Buy a dually

Optional step 0.5- remove all the stuff you want from your truck before completing step 1 so you can transfer it to the new truck. Yes you can convert from SRW to DRW, but you'll save a lot of hassle in the long run just buying a dually to start with.

go hunt around for a guy named Kennedyford on the biofuel sites here at FTE. I think he went dually and would know most of what you need.

I wonder if he made 600 K on the truck yet

me and another member looked into this..i wanted a DRW truck and he wanted SRW..the rear end will swap out but you will need spacers for the front..his DRW had the 3.73 gears as well.. would have worked out but he ran into some work that he needed the DRW so we never did the swap...

I've owned seven '99-'03 dually PSD's and not one of them has had 4.10:1s, all 3.73s. You could get them how you wanted (although limited to, iirc, two or three different choices).

To the OP, the swap would be simple. Find a Dana 80 rear-end, preferrably with your gear ratio, and swap them out. On the front, buy the spacer for duallies, yes, spacer. On a four wheel drive, the ONLY difference is a spacer bolted to the rotor, then the wheel to it.

Now the hard part... good luck finding '99-'04 dually wheels. The aftermarket sucks for dually wheels, too.
Like Kris suggested, on my 2000, I have 22.5x8.5 front, 22.5x14 rear ('super singles'). I'm dropping back to 16s to shed some weight, 16x10 up front, 16x15 out back.

Really? Great advise have you truck shopped lately? LOL... I actually did try that. My truck NADA's for right at 12K and they offered me 6K for it. At any rate that wasn't even a possibility.

Agree... Solid, any chance you can post some pic's or perhaps send me some? If you cant post them I'd be glad to put them on my site and post them here.

As far as the spacers go for the front are they readily available? Where have you guys gotten them from? Just say hey give me some of those front dually spacers. And I assume they are to run dually front wheels on?

What is a float style tire? And are you saying do that with out a dually front wheel spacer? Any pic's of that? I have actually seen a dually with large off-road style tires and wheels on the front and dually rear lifted and it looked awesome.

Thanks for all the in-put, please keep it coming.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk, and yes I know the market is in the tank right now. I've seen a lot of threads on there where guys are trying to convert SRW to DRW and they all end up at the solution I posted as being the simplest/most cost effective.
