Turn of the key ... nothing ... no noise whatsoever. Jumped the solenoid and starter spins but does not engage. Getting 12V to the battery cable at the solenoid but I have not confirmed if power is getting to the small terminal on the solenoid. While jumping the solenoid, why would it just spin and not start?
Did you jump the relay on the starter? If you did and it turned, do check for power at the small terminal while cranking. Also, the starter gear sounds like it's not engaging which would be a starter problem. Hopefully a starter will fix both problems.
I did not jump the relay. How do i do this? I did put a multimeter on the small terminal (pos. on terminal, black on frame) and got no reading. Would this mean it is the solenoid or are you still thinking "starter"?
Would it be possible for the key not turn the starter because of a safety feature that recognises that something is wrong with the starter and prevents the key from working?
I had a remote car starter installed on my 08. If the engine is running and I turn the key it will not try to start. Is this standard on the Fords or is this a feature of my car starter? Could this relate to your problem with your starter? Just wondering.

No power to solenoid is an issue, is your truck new style or heritage? If new style, starter solenoid is in the fuse box Lh. side 3rd up from bottom just swap a relay and see if it works. If heritage, you have a solenoid on the firewall that looks like an old starter relay jump the two big terminals. Hope this helps.
ok .... this is getting aggrevating! I took the starter off and had it checked out and they said everything was fine with the starter, it fired and would engaged like it was supposed too. I put the starter back on, replaced a fusable link for the ignition and still doesn't work. I wanted to replace the ignition relay but they didn't have one in stock. I will be replacing that today. However, what is strange to me is that when i jump the solenoid, it sparks and the starter just spins freely. If the starter is ok, wouldn't it crank? By by-passing the solenoid, aren't I by-passing all of the electrical components that could prevent it from starting, like the ignition, solenoid, etc..? I just don't get it.
sorry i cant help but i have a problem with my starter also.. every few weeks i turn the key and it tries to start but wont turn the engine over for about 5 seconds sometimes... anybody got and help for me out there???
I've heard of a similar recurring problem on the 4.6L engines that had to do with the IAC; not on the 5.4L though. On the 4.6 the problem only occurred when the engine was warm...like when you go to a gas stations, kill the engine, fill up, then restarting would take several seconds of crank time.
that is exactly what is happening to me it gives me a problem when it is warm.. what does IAC stand for and how do i fix it or what did your friend do?
