Arrow CEL test question

While doing a search I found this link for CEL testing and codes (about 2-3 posts down). https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...his-truck.html

My question is will this information pertain to my 95 f150 351W 5.8L? Is my truck OBDI and what does OBDI mean?

Is there a link to abbreviations on this site. I just got this truck and really enjoy learning and reading up on it but I have NO CLUE at times what you're all talking about.

My CEL light came on today on the way home from work but still seems to run as normal as it has been since I got the truck a few weeks ago. I dunno, figured I would try to figure it out using the above listed test method. If this method isn't correct can someone post a link to the correct method. Thanks for your time!

Scott

OBD = on board diagnostics.

For more information: On-board diagnostics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Your truck is OBD-I. That's the correct method for pulling codes for your truck. You should get three digit codes out of it. Let us know what you find.

By the way the test that he talked about in that thread is only the first two of three test that you can run.
What he described was the KOEO (Key On Engine Off) and CM (Continuous Memory) tests.
He did talk about CM did he not?

Anyway after the CM codes you can run the KOER (Key On Engine Running) test.

Thanks for the the information! I'll get home tonight and give it a try. How long does this type of test take and would you guys suggest getting a plug in computer for this? I plan on keeping the truck for a long while and it does have 147K miles on her now. Thanks again for your input.

Yes I would get a reader as it makes so much easier.
I would recomend the Equus 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader.

You can do all three tests in about 30 min.

You can do both an engine off (continuous memory codes are part of the engine off test in my opinion, as it's the same operation and blink sequence) and engine running test in 10 minutes at most, I would think, depending on how many codes are stored. If you are comfortable counting a blinking check engine light, there's no reason to get a code reader -- it can't do anything more than what a paperclip can do. Personally, I rank counting somewhere between 1 and 9 several times very low on my difficulty scale. The trickiest part is figuring out the sequence and digit separation, but it really isn't that difficult once you get accustomed to what you're looking for.

I found the same one at Kragen for only 10 bucks more so I greabbed it. It's too late to put it on and test tonight. No CEL today so we'll see what it turns up tomorrow. Thanks guys!
