what year truck should i look for for a solid D44 to best fit my 87 F-150? and as for the clearance issue, would 2" leveling coils up front help enough to keep me from cutting my cross member? and are the radius arms the same length?
any 70s 1/2 ton truck will work as a donor for the axle. As for clearance under the crossmember issue - it depends on how you are going to use it. If you are doing the swap for offroad purposes where you are going to be flexing the front alot I've seen the swap done with 6in of lift and still hit the crossmember so you will most likely have to do some cutting in any situation. I've never seen it done with less than 6in of lift but I imagine things are going to be very tight up there with only 2in coils.
The radius arms for the solid axle are longer but I'm pretty sure you can use your existing radius arm brackets just move them back the proper distance.
Good luck, I've nothing but good things about doing this swap.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Nov-02 AT 08:40 AM (EST)] well, right now, i'm only using it for street use and maybe for fishing on the beach. a lifts going on later, probly in the summer, just for bigger tires to mud in. btw, will the transfer case and the shaft i need to switch outa the c6 work for my year? i mean, a c6 is a c6 right?
I did this conversion on my 89 f150. I would reccoment at least 4'' springs or 6''. With 4'' you will for surt have to trim the crossmember for the pumpkin to clear. I did mine with 3'' lift. You have to trim the front edge off the crossmember reguardless of the lift to clear the track bar. The radius arm mounts from the 70s ford are the ones to use and they have to be moved back from the stock location.
