289/302 Questions

I went with a neighbor this morning to pick up two complete motors. The seller said that they were both 289. One he claimed was a Shelby engine. It had MT cast alum valve covers, and a C4 attached. Both engines need rebuilding.

Can anyone recommend ways to ID the engines as to be sure what they are? How many bolts in the manifold? Was there a C4/289 bell pattern? Is there a site to help with the IDing?

thanks

John

For some basic info look at

289 High Performance -- The Ford V-8 Engine Workshop

Looks like the quickest way is to examine the harmonic balance damper and the rod bolts. Also, if a 289HP, there would be a solid lifter camshaft and screw in studs for the rockers. A regular 289 would have either close tolerance (into 1966) slots to control the pushrod or rail rockers if after mid-1966. All 289/302 engines took C4's behind them that I know of especially if prior to 1969 when some FMX's started to show up.

Follow up: all small block 289/302's had a C4 behind them up through 1982 then the C5 followed to 1986. There was a big block bellhousing for the 351M engine but I understand that is very rare. The FMX was used on the 351W and 351C.

Nudder question, What was the first year that 302 roller engines were used in cars?

I also beleive a 289 had a 5 bolt bell housing pattern and the 302 had 6. This next one is really hard to explain so I will try my best. The 289 cylinder wall stopped at the bottom, duh right? Well the 302 is extended down about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch further into the block to account for the longer stroke of the 302 verses the 289. There is no support around the extra 1/4 of lenght on the cylinder wall, so it is easy to see it when the pan is off. The bore is the same on both engines.

Other wise all the parts should swap from a 289 to a 302.

289s were 5 bolt until mid '65, then changed to 6 bolt, same as subsequent 302/351 & 300 six.

The "Shelby" motor was a standard hi-po with a manifold, carb and tri-y headers.

At this late date, there are a lot of clones vs. original 'K' code engines.

Not quite.

Beginning in 1978, the C6 was first available as an option on 1978 F100/150's with 302's. Most 1979 F100/150's with 302's came with C6's.

All 1980/81 F100/150's with 302's came with C6's. From 1982 thru 1990, either the C6 or the AOD was available.

Only the 1981/83 F100's with 255's (the 302's underpowered little brother) used C4's.

Bona fides: 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog / Text / Section A70 / Transmission Application Chart / Pages 14 thru 17.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some 1979 T-Birds, Cougars, Ranchero's and LTD II's with 302's came with FMX's.

The 1980/91 fullsized Fords, Merc's and 1980/90 Lincoln Town Cars, 1982/87 Continental Sedans, Continental Mark VI's, VII's and T-Bird's with 302's all used AOD.

Both engines appear to be 6 bolt. I was not sure if the 5/6 bolt change happened in the 289 or 302, just recalled that it did. No Alum hi-rise or tri-y, but he got two engines and a tranny for a good price.

He bought a drivable 87 Mercury Grand Marque yesterday with about 85,000 miles on it that had belonged to a friends mother. Looks like he probably will use that motor, since it doesn't need rebuilding.
