[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Nov-02 AT 02:47 PM (EST)]I was wondering from all you hard core off-roaders.
what is the Front axle on a 2000 f150 xlt fully loadded ext cab 4x4 with 4.6 LS 3.55 in the back
I was wondering how they hold up and what kind of options are in it like open or LS. \
Has anyone had problems other then the electric locks on the axle instead of manual ?
has anyone cracked the case?
The front on that truck is an IFS setup. The actual differential is seldom the problem or weakness of the IFS. Often it's the CV shafts or various linkages that don't hold up to bigger tires. If it's a street driven machine you could probably run 36's or maybe 38's w/ minimal problems but for a truck that's wheeled hard I would never go bigger than a 35 on an IFS. I'm not too sure what alls out there as far as traction aids for the front of an IFS Ford but I know there are a few.
From working at a Ford dealer (quit in 2000) I can tell you the weakest part in the front are the sway bar links, then the torsion bars. The may seem to be big and beefy, but, under hard use the torsion bars will snap, especially if you run big tires or a suspension lift. On the positive side, a broken one makes a great pry bar.
I think running 33s on the front stock suspension/setup would be okay offroad. Like anything, how much you abuse it determines breakage.
A 33 is a fairly big tire. I would start with 33s on aluminum rims and work my way up to 35s. If you can't live with the breakage of 33s, you are not going to like what 35s do to the truck off-road. imo.
I would probly not go with a tire bigger then 33's
I mostly use it for Logging roads to get into fishing spots so im not really that aggressive of an 4wheeler.
I may lift it 4inches and get some wider tires but outer then that I'll probly only go that big since I use that truck for long highway trips
if CV joints are the problem I could have custom made ones.
I have a place over here that can do everything from driveshats to CV joints.
Has anyone tried this????
Does anybody know of heavyer torsion bars I can buy.
