Why 4X4?
Why 4X4?
well in my opinion.
resale is better- a 100k car or 2wd truck is not worth anything but a 4wd is still worth something. plus when bought new a few years down the road the difference in the original price of the 4wd and 2wd doesn't depreciate as much as the rest of the options. if you paid 34,000 for a 4wd and 30,000 for a 2wd drive. 6 years later they would be offset by approx. 13,000 to 10,000. so why not get it. you don't lose your money on it.
why not have it all. go anywhere, pull anything, and not have to worry.
for the kids. why not put your kids in the biggest thing you can get your hands on. you cann't buy enough safety. i think my babies will go places in a tank.
and my final thought---well i cann't say, but for those of you that paid for yours up front then you can understand the principle of money and spending.

I have a 4x4 for a couple of reasons. My first car was an '86 4wd VW Vanagon Syncro. I bought it so I could do even better in the snow during snowboarding trips, camping in the woods, etc. Plus, it held it's value because it was rare (sold it with 209k miles for $5,500.)
I sold it because, well, it was old. Bought a 98 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 supercab, with plans of buying a canopy (which I have) so I could still camp in my vehicle. If I could afford a 4x4 Econoline I would have. When I bought the truck, I lived in a snowy climate, which was one main reason for 4x4. I would be coming over the pass to come back to the beach, where I live now. It doesn't snow here, but we have all kinds of storms. I've used it quite a few times in the last month I've been here. Pulling people out of ditches on rainy nights, etc. Plus, 4x4 helps you get through situations with more confidence, more clearance underneath, and I like the feeling of sitting up higher. Anyway, just my reasons for buying a 4x4... And I do still use 4x4 even though I live in town.

why waste money on a 2 wheel drive???????? i dont know what i would do wiith out my 4x4. i take it to the mud bogs, take it 4 wheelin, cruisin. and i love pullin out other little trucks. there is just something about drivin by a dirt road or a clearing in the trees and seeing a trail or mud hole and taking a little side trip to have some fun and getting dirty. its nice in the snow and you get looks from everybody. you never see little kids stareing at a little 2wd truck now do you. they are always drooling over that big old ugly FORD 4x4 with loud exhaust, multi colered paint, and knobey super swamper tsl/sx, and almost always covered in mud.

The last time my dad and I went prospecting in Mexico with a 2x4 we got stuck 5 times in one day. After that I got my jeep Cherokee and my dad got a 4x4 '79 F-250, and each truck has only been stuck once, in years of 'wheeling. Also, we have driven into places we would have never attempted with a 2x4.

I couldent stand driving a 2wd vechile. My first ever vechile was a 93 ranger 4x4. First thing i did was lifted it and put mud tires on it. Lifted 4x4s are the best. All my friends at school at school loved it and always wanted to go offroading in it. Im 18 now and about a month ago bought the beast. !999 F-250 4x4 7.3 Powerstroke diesel Lariat SuperCab. Man i love this truck. All the girls want to drive it and when i pull in to the college parking lot everyone hears the diesel and just stares. I aslo go to the beach alot down here in Florida in man when you see all the hot girls you just kinda wanna show off and root up some sand. If i had a 2wd truck i couldent do that and would probblay get stuck and embarrassed in front of them. Also if you have a 4x4 you can make so much money pulling yankees that dont know how to drive in sand on the beach out.

My personal pet peeve is jacked up trucks with tires and exterior accessories .....cruising the strip. saw that a lot in fla. sounds like you got your head on straight. not all yankees are dumb drivers...but i'm only northern by birth.

Where I hunt and explore on 2-track roads in the semi-arid SW, there are many places where you can get stuck from lack of the front wheels pulling when crossing arroyos(think of them as creeks without any water in them except when it rains). Your rear receiver hitch can be sitting on the slope behind you when coming up out of the bottom of the ditch so your rear tires are hanging and in 4WD your front wheels will pull you that 1 foot extra distance that will get all four wheels on the ground with traction again. There are all sorts of situations in undulating 2-track roads (washouts etc.) where you can be in a frame twisting situation that will leave you light enough on the rear end to leave you stuck without you being buried in it but you are still stuck without 4WD. Now when I was younger, we tried to get stuck because that was part of the adventure. Laying in the dirt and mud and "jacking" around was part of the fun. I passed that a long time ago! Now if you only had 2WD you could avoid getting stuck in some of those situations I mentioned by gunning it beating you and your truck up and get through it but if you don't make it you are really stuck!

BECAUSE I AM A FORD TRUCK MAN.
i bought my first 4x4 ranger in july. i just simply think you are buying a better truck.
i have a 2wd ranger for going back and forth to work, but when that texas rain starts falling and other cars start going into the ditches i change to the 4x4 truck and slow the hell down.
4x4 and anti-lock brakes. there IS a more secure feeling.
plus the couple of times i have taken it out in the mud, all i got is a shiot eating grin on my face CUZ ITS FUN and I'M A FORD TRUCK MAN.

Where I live the winters are TREACHEROUS!!! If you don't have four wheel drive then your vehicle is PARKED for the winter a majority of the time and you are getting cab rides (SUVs with 4x4) or bumming rides with buddies. And some of the hunting trails are brutal and you will get stuck if not in 4 wheel drive.

Why 4X4?
I have noticed a lot of people on this site have 4 wheel drive, but
>they aren't in snowy areas. Why? Do you go off-road? Is it
>because 4X4's just look better? (Of course they do!!!)
>
>Why have you chosen a 4 wheel drive truck over a 2 wheel
>drive truck, or, for that matter, a car?
>
Are you telling me there is something else besides 4 wheel drive??!!:-staun
