Because with no weoght on the bed, you can't get the traction you need.
Very embarrassing when you can't get out of a little patch of wet grass, and frustrating too!
Then the little Camry, with front wheel drive, has to help you out of the mess.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Jun-02 AT 01:33 AM (EST)]So I can go where no man has gone before. No, really. Living in Oregon, much around here is wilderness and I like being able to go where I will. That, and as it rains here eleven months out of the year, its fun to go mud bogging. Nothing funner than blowing by stuck chebys in five foot of slop.

What gets me are all of these city folks who need their 4 x 4's... Why? I guess you need one to jump the curb or grind up the ramp into the parking garage. Which brings up another point....here they are trying to park this massive tank into a parking spot, backing up, pulling forward...all the time backing up traffic... Hey, get a car!

Thats you! Not everyone selects their truck based solely on whats cheapest.

It snows on 'us city folk' to. I like the looks of a four wheel drive truck even if I don't need to use four wheel drive that often!
I have not found any 'Two Wheel Drive Parking Only' garages in Chicago.

Massive Tanks? They come in all sizes. I've seen many more cars having difficulty parallel parking than trucks 2 or 4 wheel drive.
I've never seen traffic backed up because of it... Hey, get a life!
Well to start my list we heat our home with wood, so to get it we drive into the woods to get it, 4x4 is a must. Next I off road extensively so that is another. Farm use is another, along with the fact I live (well used to I am in the Army now) in Erie PA so snow can be an issue. You never know when something can go wrong, that a two wheel drive can't take care of so there is another. 4x4's have better resale to put that on the list. I have owned one two wheel drive in my life, and will never make that mistake again, except for my next project, thinking about a prostreet F150. I made my wife buy a 4x4 Sport-trac, because who knows what can happen in the winter or what-not, where it may come in handy for her. I have even lectured and taught her the proper way of using 4x4 (this included many hours behind the wheel on road in snow and off road). To sum up 4x4 is for me, period. Thats just me. If ya can't get it dirty why own it?!!!
well, when I got my '95 I didn't think I'd need 4X4. And I haven't except for once. And you know what, it would've been worth it to me to have it that one time. But I learned alot on that truck. When we went truck shopping when I was 16 (I am 18 now), I had only a few but steadfast requirments: Ford (of course) F-250, inline six, 2wd, AT, and of course exceptionally clean and low miles. Well I got exactly that and it's been a perfect truck but: It's got low resale value. Everyone that wants a 3/4 ton wants a V-8, everyone that wants a six wants the 5 speed, or they want 4wd. So even though I got exactly what I wanted at the time, I learned that sometimes it's a good idea to look ahead a little bit and buy something that's going to be saleable in a couple of years. So in retrospect, I should've boughten a V-8 4x4. But hey, live and learn right? I did because the next truck I bought I resold and doubled my money, and that's how I bought the '72. And sadly, it looks like the '72 is going to have to go to help pay for college this fall. but it's okay because in 4 or 5 years I will be able to buy one like but better and have it built the way I want so it all works out in the end I suppose. Who I really ramble right off the subject didn't I? Well, I am going to finish sleeping off what's left of this stupid hangover (I AM NEVER DRINKING AGAIN )
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Oct-02 AT 03:52 PM (EST)]I own 4x4s because i live in the country. The roads are bad if it rains or snows. Cars will not go down the road where i live, in adverse weather.
I know ill catch some heat for this, but i agree whith the other fella, in wondering why people who live in town by 4x4s. Nothing against them. Most say its for when it snows. That seems funny, because any good front wheel drive car performs better on snow packed or icy roads than 4x4s, unless you get more than 8-10". And yes ive owned front wheel drives.
I also do not under stand the off roading thing. On the ranch we are constantly chasing off people who just wanted to go and climb hills and tear up ground. Nobody seems to understand tread lightly. They seem to think it takes tires spinning and lots of hp to make it up a hill.
Found 2 guys stuck in our pasture in the deep snow. They had drove over a slight bank covered with snow. Pickup was burried up to the doors. I had the tractor taking hay out to the cows. On my way back i pushed snow with the blade up tight all around the chevy. Packed it in real good. They were Pi$$ed.
I go 'wheeling almost every weekend. If I didn't have a 4wd I am pretty sure I wouldn't have as much fun. I live in a city. I drive a big ol' lifted dirty, dented, scratched ugly ford. So?
Just because there is no snow in an area doesn't mean there can't be other inclement weather that warrants the use of a 4x4. I grew up in Colorado, both in the Denver area and in the mountains. I know what it means to drive in snow...what about rain, mud...ice?
I realized the confidence and abilities of a 4x4 after my parents bought the '84 Bronco. That thing would have gone anywhere.
Every truck I've had since '91 has been a 4x4 ('73 highboy, '82 custom cab, '91 Explorer, '00 S/C). Where I live it doesn't snow often, but the rain leaves things slick with the moss and leaves. In the winter the ice comes and goes. I've seen 4x4's and 4x2's in the ditch, but I don't get overconfident I know how not to push it from personal experience...I just get where I'm going. I find it easier to do that with a 4x4.
I use the 4x4's camping, towing, and just driving around. When I'm out in the woods I tend to get stuck in 2wd. Saves me the embarassment when I can shift it to 4wd and keep going.
I elect to have a large truck because a Subaru doesn't have much of a payload...and Ford doesn't make 'em.
Two reasons.1. I`m like the guy on the first page about the wet boat ramps. Just like Pepsi, you gotta have it!! 2. It sure is a good feeling when the back two stops pushing that rig, you can just reach down a grab that MAGIC STICK and the orange 4x4 lights up on that dash, giver sum gas and feel that rig launch out of there. Then go on home like nothing ever happened. That`s why 4x4!!!! LOL

I have a 79 bronco and I never off road with it, can't afford the broken parts, and there are no places to go around me, at least without the cops. I have lifted it 6 inches and am putting big tires onit, I just like to sit higher in the air, and there are alot of crazy people around me who don't know how to drive, and there are alot of people who can afford the huge suv's and don't need them, and even worse think they are the size of a honda and try anything in them, I like to sit up cause I feel safer around them. And when it does snow, I like to go out when everyone is stuck at home. I am even converting my 78 crewcab to 4x4 to sit higher, I can't stand sitting low to the ground. People drive so crazy around here, I only really feel safe in my old deuce and a half 6x6, no reason for a truck that big, but why 4x4 when you can have 6x6
I've had 3 broncos and I took all of them off-road and my F350 is 4x4 because I enjoy pulling jeeps and cute-utes out of the mud. On the other hand, possibly my favorite truck I ever owned was my '92 F150 300 I6 5spd TWO WHEEL DRIVE. I bought it solely for gas milage back when I was driving 60 miles a day for school, I never thought I could love a two wheel drive truck so much. I don't mind driving a 2x4 as long as I have a 4x4 to play around with.
I have yet to take my F250 off road, mainly because I'm in college, and I don't know the area. However, I kinda miss my 2wd... I wheeled the crap out of that thing... As for the whole snow excuse for getting a 4x4, well, I never had any problems going anywhere with my 2wd, 700 lbs of weight in the box, 4 good winter tires(not them useless all seasons), and, it went wherever I pointed it, within reason of course. My father doesn't see the need to own a 4x4, the last time he drove one was 1956... I've seen him take his 96 Ranger places that people with 4x4's had tried to go and couldn't... Alot of it is in the skill and common sense of the driver too, I went places with the 82 that people were betting that it couldn't be done with a 4x4, let alone a 4x2, it's all a matter of picking the proper line, and knowing your limits, why try it if you know you can't make it?
