Same on my '93. Also, the linkage has some rubber or nylon pieces (can't recall) that go on the linkage "pins" ...and my Ford dealer had a heckuva time id'ing what I needed. I think I recall they were discontinued stock too. You might want to stop by your dealer and look at a schematic/exploded view of all the needed pieces.
It looked like I could use Jesus clips (the ones that look like an hour glass, sorry I don't know the real name) in a pinch, but it looked like it would make shifting sloppy and binding.
The **** on the wife's '95 PSD actually says "PUSH DOWN" next to the big "N". The push-down lockout is built into the linkage just below the shifter under the truck, external to the t-case, so it's possible that the same t-case, in different years/models, would operate differently.
+1 on the WD40. It's a mediocre lubricant, and not a penetrant at all. On the Saturn site I frequent, it's astonishing how many people say "I anointed the <insert rusted fastener here> with WD40, and it didn't do a thing...". Duh!
IIRC I don't have to push down to get into 4H on my 95. It's also a very small motion; it doesn't move far, maybe 2 inches? You'll feel the click as it slips into 4H. I believe I do have to push down slightly to get into 4L. All while stopped and in Park is the way I do it.
