vacuum bottle

I recently bought a vacuum bottle so that I could eat a warm lunch somedays. I went to use it for the first time today and when I opened it, the pressure pushed some of my food out of the container. I've never used one of these before so I figure I did something wrong but I'm not sure what. Anybody want to give me that obvious tip that I'm apparently missing?

Maybe a little less grub in the bottle?

Or try opening it slowly?

The 'vacuum' in a vacuum bottle is used as insulation. So your contents are not under vacuum. If you put hot food in a bottle and close it up, it may expand a bit and cause some pressure inside the food storage area. So, not so full. You may also try pre-heating with hot water to keep it hotter and pre-heat the air and material in the bottle, which might control expansion, maybe.

Well, it wasn't all the way full but I did close the lid right away so I could see the pressure build up part. I'll let it sit for a little bit before I close the lid next time, hopefully I won't end up with chilli all over my floor mats again

Don't put any soda pop in the thing.
The glass liner will explode.
I learned the hard way.

I always preheat mine with hot water; pour it in and let it set (closed) for a few minutes. Keeps the food hot longer, and you can also do the same for cold beverages/food by pre-chilling the bottle. Too much food = too much pressure! Don't feel bad - I had venison stew on the ceiling of my truck 2 - 3 hunting seasons ago....

Hey 'ben. . . . it's cause they still work!

Herman,
As for why the chili exploded. . . . B E A N S.
Hot chili and beans. . . beans cause G A S.

Seriously though, what everyone is saying is correct.
Pre-heat the thermos bottle with hot water. If I have enough time, I use boiling water. Seal bottle and allow it to 'temper' the container.
Also, all kidding aside, I wouldn't be surprised at the beans 'gassing' and increasing the pressure inside.

Try it with chicken noodle soup. Gas pressure will be less.
Mmmmmmm-mmmm Good!

In addition to all the other suggestions, one question - do you change altitude on your drive to work?

I just bought a 'new' one of them 'old style' Stanleys. Best thermos I ever owned. First had one back in the 80s in the Marines.....I even ran OVER that SOB one time.....Had a good dent in it, but kept my coffee piping hot all day.

The one I just got will have nothing BUT coffee in it. I'm going to get one of the shorter, wider 'soup' thermi for this winter for work. Great for chicker/rice....chicken/stars....etc..
