I will be ordering a Dana 60 for the front end of my 4x and will need to change my rear gears to match. I was quoted $850 (parts and labor)to do the swap(Rear gears only). That seemed high to me.Is it?
Also how hard is it to do? Any special tools required? Anyone awear of any article or websites that describe the process?
How much can I expect to pay for the gears alone (NEW)?
While I'm at it. Has anyone installed ORU's reverse shackle kit?
around here shops usually charge 100-200 labor for rear, and 2-300 for front, plus parts. a gear set usually runs about 150-200 bucks, plus an instal kit which includes bearings seals shims etc. I have a guy now that will do mine for 80 bucks labor for front, and 80 for rear. Thhats pretty damn good. As for doing it yourself, you need alot of time and some special tools because you gotta get the backlash between .005-.015 usually, and gear pattern perfect. also with the danas...to change shims you gotta press the bearings on and off the carrier. its a PITA
where do you live 351ho? I need my gears changed bad. Ive been driving around in the woods in 4lo with the hubs unlocked and I actually have some good top speed. Can barely get into 3rd gear.
$200 per axle isn't too bad for labor. Come to think of it, that is actually really cheap. 351ho is getting an OUTSTANDING deal for labor on his. I was quoted $1200 for both with gears and install kits. So I did it myself. It is not as hadr as everyone makes out, it just takes alot of time. I did my front and rear in about 19 hours. The only special tools I needed were a dial indicator with magnetic base and a torque wrench, everything else came in the install kits. I spent $450 from Reider racing and did the rest myself.
Also remember guys, prices in one city are based on cost of living. Labor in podunk mississippi (no offense to anyone) is gonna be a alot less than labor in Beverly Hills.

I live in lakeville, near taunton and new bedford. Yeah I think I could probably do the swap myself but every says its too hard. I still havent done much drivetrain related work yet. saving some money by installing it myself would be great but if i mess up thats more money.
i just though id say that i got new gears and a traclok. guy charged me 150 for the install. i think he has no life but wow talk about cheap. by they way it was just the rear axle, i was deprived of 4 wheel drive.
Interesting, you're only about an hour from me. Small world huh.
