Hey guys. I think my alternator fried and I'm not sure why. About a week ago I left my key on and killed the batteries. I jumped the truck and they charged and I drove the truck for about a week. I then parked it and went through the whole front end. Ball joints, hubs and bearings, ORU cross over steering and ajustable track bar, etc. I also did the 6637 and the IAH delete. When I did the IAH delete I just taped up the wires and left them this might be part of my problem. I got the truck back to gether and drove it for about a day and all of the sudden it started making low volts and then just got to the point where if I shut it off it just wont start. Should I have done sometyhing with the IAH wires?
Did you remove the wires on the heater inside the intake tube or from the relay? If you removed the wire that goes from the battery to the relay, it would always have power. If it would rub through the tape, it would short out and kill the batteries. Need info on which wires you removed.
If you could make it to Autozone or someplace like it, they will check your Batteries & Alt for free. I've left my key on twice also, man I hate when I do that........
Thanks, I'm gonna go remove the wires now. Unfortunately the truck is tottally dead at my buddy's house so I cant get it to auto zone or anything. Also I forgot to mention that the wire on the back of the alternator got pretty hot and the connector looks a little black.
When you jumped the truck and removed the cables the alternator saw that your batteries were 100% dead and tried to completly charge them. By doing so your alternator cooked itself due to the added current. That is why the wire was hot and black. Replace the alternator and the blackend connector. Charge and load test both batteries seperatly. Sometime you can discharge a battery to the point of no return.
My experance with batteries is that once you drain them down complety they never are what they were before. On you AIH, Just remove the red wire from the relay and you can leave the black. Doubt that had anything to do with you battery issue this time. Unless it is in the 30s the AIH don't come into play. Follow Jim's advise on the alternator and get ready for some new batteries, should they not test out.
Thanks for the help guys. I replaced the alternator and the connector. I jumped the truck and everything seems fine, but I think i'm going to replace the batterys anyway. They look kinda old and I just don't trust that theyre gonna stay charged.
