Hi all hoping someone can help with this one. Getting excess black smoke very sparatic. When it feels like it wants to smoke it looks like a pulling tractor, its not consistent. No chips or tuners only mods in signature. The turbo and EGR are working correctly(not sticking). Drove around with the tech so he could watch the reading and everything is within range. It does not matter if its very light throttle or even WOT, smokes the same when it decides it wants to do it. Then it will clear up for awhile and then do it again. Hope someone has some answer ICP is within range and injectors not spiking outta the ordinary.
egr issue or turbo issue. the egr valve can open even though it "looks" ok. watch your boost gauge when the smoke starts and tell me where it is under a hard load. start off in 3rd gear and do a wot pull and watch boost gauge. if you cant get to the mark past 20 then thats a sign right there.
Thanks for all the help, EGR and boost are fine 29 psi WOT, boost is very quick and responsive and very little if any turbo fart as they call it. Just when it gets in the mood to smoke she does argh today very little to any smoke never know what tommorrow will bring thou. To be honest it runs like a champ just concerned with all the smoke at times with The EGR and turbo on these things being so tempermental. Thanks again for the help FTE is the best
Try un-plugging the EGR, see if it still smokes.
Do not leave the EGR un-plugged, your MPG will
go down. Look into the EGR blocker plate and Turbo
up-pipe replacement.
Fuel is from the same place, truck stop off of I-70 here in kansas. Always the cheapest and the roll the most fuel. Will try the EGR unplug let ya all know this evening. Thanks
Answer to all it is black smoke, and no not all sluggish actually quite the opposite runs like a champ when smoking. Gonna check the IAT sensor, have already pulled the EGR and it is very clean almost looks new after 36,000 and is opening and closing like suppose to. Question is could the turbo be stuck in the closed position?? If is wouldn't there be turbo boost lost. Not stuck in the open position never overboosting and very quick turbo response. Not sluggish at any throttle position take off to WOT. Thanks again for all the help everybody really do appreciate it.
if turbo was stuck, whether it was stuck open or closed, you would get a code. cause you would either be getting an over boost or under boost condition. the whole point of the VGT is it directs the exhaust flow directly at the vanes for faster spool time and then slowly adjusts as the boost climbs so the exhaust is flowing over the vanes more instead of directly at them. if it was stuck open or closed your CEL would pop on with some kind of code.
