i have finally swapped my 460 into my 74 f-100 and the headers had those factory exhaust gaskets and they didnt leak before but now that unhooked them and wnet into the 74 along with the engine they leak on both sides i even replaced the gaskets with new ones and the same thing is going on as well whats the deal? Do i need to go with cooper heder gaskets?
Back in my "earlier" years, we used to cut the header flange between the tubes so basically each tube had it's own flange. Worked back then. You might want to try that . . . . or not. Sounds like the flange is warped a bit. The copper or aluminum gaskets should take care of that though.
Its Permatex "Ultra Copper" high temp silicone, can get you the part # if need be. Its very common and I know places like Autozone and Advanced has it. Napa should too.
I usually put a light coat on the steel/cast iron instead of the gasket, don't know if it really matters though. You just want a thin even film of it and follow the directions on the tube.
dfk is correct. My next door neighbor has been a mechanic for years. My heads are pitted in places and all we did to fix it was put a good bead on the gasket, install it immediately, and bolt it down. The package says to wait and that might work too but for getting it to seal those small pits is why I squished it on immediately. Ultra Copper is the correct name. I purchased the last tube of it at O'reilly Auto.
