Post Starting Problems

I have an 85 F250 diesel 4x4. The other morning I went to fire it up and it turned over pretty slow, like the batteries were drained or something. It had been sitting awhile so I drove it around and let it run figuring that the alt needed to charge them back up. Shut it down, fired it back up, and it was a little slower in turning over instead. Had the batts tested at a tire store and they tested fine. Purchased a new alt and installed it, but, same problem. Had the alt tested and it tested good. When tested running, however, it showed a negative charge, and when viewing the battery charge gage in the pickup it does lean slightly to the negative side. Any ideas??....

If you are still unsure if it's charging, get a voltmeter, and with the truck running read the voltage on the battery. It should be around 14 volts if it's charging. If it's 12 or less, you are not charging.

The problem persists...

What I failed to mention in my first post was that eventually my pickup would not start at all, just crank a little and stop, but it will always crank over just a little every time I try to start it. When I plug the jumper cables in it fires right up.

I went and replaced the positive cable on it today to see if that might have been the issue but it turns out that this is not the problem either. I had to jump it to get it running again and after taking it for a little drive I shut it down and tried to fire it back up again, but just got the crank..crank..dead thing again.

So, this far into the issue I have replaced the alternater and the positive batt cable. The Batteries are about 6 months old. I had it volt tested while running and the meter read something like 11.67 volts? Im confused...

I'm completely throwing something out there, but does your truck have a voltage regulator? It should be on the passenger side fender. It looks like this.

I know nothing about diesels,or their starting systems, but this might be it.

It does have one and I'll definitely check it out. Are the problems I mentioned symptoms that lead you to a voltage regulator issue in your pickup in the past??

Well,I just replaced it in my truck, but it turned out to be my alternator.BUT since you already replaced the alternator, and it checks out fine,it's most likely the regulator.Hope it works.

Well, the regulator was the problem it had shorted out and was not allowing the alternater to charge the batteries. Thanks for the lead Fordtruckman and thanks to the others for your help, those other parts needed replacing anyway
