Stop crying about scrapped trucks!

Most of what I see is junk anyhow. One or two good parts and then 3 tons of junk! Trucks that are beyond repair! Did anyone ever stop and think about the sweet pass side door they bought at a swap meet? How can a door that is this nice and rust free not be on a truck? I'll tell you, there are people out there that buy rust free trucks (nicer than the one you or I started with) and part them out. Now thats a crime compared to the "Junk" being hauled to the scrapper.Kevin Bigwin

Is that how you really feel?
Is there a demarkation line between good and junk?
Is there an almost good and an almost junk?
What about the guys who hang out outside the scrappers waiting to hi-jack your stuff?

A bored Sunday Morning coffee drinker wants to know!!

i had to drop a load of demo at the scrap yard friday, (bridge beams, not vehicles!), and there in the yard was a 57 plymouth 2 door, no post, body straight as could be. i backed down yard about 800 ft., grappled off steel, headed back to scale, and, holy crap!!, there were two cars sitting on top of this car! crushed!! somebody NEEDED these parts!! these trucks are in the same position!! they are being crushed for $$$$, and we that need suffer. the more that get trashed, the less for the needy!! the less there is, the higher the demand and dollar value. the way the "system" is designed today, it is more profitable to scrap than part out, opening the door to get rid of all our beloved (JUNK). i don't want to lose my toy!! and , i need your parts!! enough of my nonsence, i may have started a verbal war.

A few weeks ago I bought a couple NOS 19.5" Budds that had been turned in to a yard in Montana for scrap value. NEW OLD STOCK!!! Thank goodness the yard owner had the sense to throw them on ebay. He doesn't have any more, though. I asked.

Living up North, you see some trucks that just aren't any good to anyone. Small parts on the other hand, can be removed to help someone out somewhere. If everyone, everywhere did this, noone nowhere would have to buy ten trucks to make one, lol.

The only one crying is you Kevin!! I know you think this is a great service to your local scrap yard--but I am with these guys--saying--only scrap what absolutely is junk--not to sell off the trucks that we all use for daily travel or hobby.
Not too many nice doors come from a rusted out hulk and when have you ever seen that?

I want to tell anyone that I have a 56 f600 that is getting parted out and has some good parts left and I will try to save the cab and drive shafts and bumpers, etc and possibly the boat-anchor yblock.
I also saw GOOD 1977 ford pickup at the scrapper with a nice bed on it......and the thing was scrapped for the money.....wise-up and remember--do not buy it---if you just want to scrap it........Bill

Man, your really out to make friends with this thread

Sure we'd all like to save 'em. I have no problem junking rusty sheetmetal and frames boat anchor T-98s. All somebody has to do is post a wanted ad and I'd sell them something, otherwise I only have so much room. Yeah it may seem like they are getting hard to find, but ford made 100,000+ a year so they out there.

Kevin, that may be the case where you live, but around here, where things don't rust as fast, hardly a week goes by when I don't see a couple of semi loads go by. Trailers loaded up with cars, pickups, farm trucks etc. that aren't in all that bad shape. That's lot of good useable doors, fenders, and what-not going to the crusher.

Farmers are cleaning out their junk piles and tree rows, and who can blame them?

Hey 2many, the made barely more than 100,000 of each year. Lose between 5 and 15% of total number per year due to accidents, and theft, and such. Yeah, a few things gotta go to the crusher. You are unlikely to sell that odd part (like F-350 and larger bumpers, frames, etc.) Everyone wants a F-100 (yuck). Scrap all the rusty F-1/100 stuff you want. Keep the hard to find parts off it, (grilles for the 53-55 are not reproduced, so keep them). BUT, for those of us tired of seeing a F-100 every where we look, we go after the bigger trucks, DON'T SEND THAT VERY RARE SET OF F-800 HOOD TRIM TO THE CRUSHER. Our stuff IS NOT reproduced, all the little trucks things can be bought online. OURS can't. so yes, when I see an old F-3/350, or larger truck destined for the crusher, I get sick, real sick. There are more than enough piles of Jap crap laying around that can get just as much scrap money. Scrap the stuff that's readily available, leave the stuff that isn't alone. On that note, anyone got any Big Job parts they want to scrap (I will take them off your hands, and give $100 a ton just like the scrap yard, since auto scrap is not considered clean and only brings half what good clean scrap brings).

So why have these trucks have been sitting in the yards for maybe 30 yrs? Why hasn't anyone snapped them up?! The answer is obvious: no one wants them, no one is buying parts off them, no one is willing to pay to ship parts at today's costs. Yard owners are in business to make money, and under pressure from many sides.

It just makes all our trucks more valuable.

Kevin, I hope you don't give walford a stroke from starting this thread. I agree only s much space but keep what you know is hard to get for big trucks just because I like them.

I am sure someone out there understands why bigwin does what he does. He lives in town and the authorities will tow his stuff away if he doesn't do something with it. I believe he should have bought the big-job hood and left the rest. ksmith--if I wasn't heading south soon--I would ride along!! sorry!!
I decided to remove the cab and it has a great roof. SO--I will remove it and blast it and if nothing else--make a rat-rod out of it. The yblock is all there and I am disenheartened by these engines. I have a few of them and the more I work on them -can understand why they quit making them. I am going to build a 302/351 truck next and see what all you darksiders are talking about--haha!!
Scrap--means rusted steel scrap!! NOT USABLE PARTS!! I do body and paint--so to Bigwin he generally sends that stuff out to be done.....so anything with a rust hole is scrap to him....to each there own!!! I will be bringing 2 1953 f100s back this week---and the guy was going to scrap the 1---I WILL SAVE IT!! Bill

I haul scrap all the time, mostly newer vehicles. But I've scrapped plenty of 70's trucks( and a few older ones ) .

I always get crap from people saying I shouldn't scrap useable parts/fixable vehicles. But where are those people that like to bad mouth me when I try to sell those good parts/vehicles but no one wants to buy them or pay to ship them. Just recently I tried to sell some parts off my 78 F250 4x4 donor truck.
I kept dropping the price and still no takers. ( How about $15.00 for a rust free radiator/core support ) I had a few guys that said they wanted them and then they bailed on the deal. So I took my sawzall and cut up some rust free/ and decent parts. It's getting to the point where it's just less hassle to just scrap it all. I can see why some scrap guys refuse to sell parts off what they are scrapping.

I scrap a lot of vehicles. I don't have a warehouse that I can store all the "good" parts until someone finally decides they want to buy them. But when I'm stripping the vehicle if there are good parts I'll pull them and try to sell them. But if they don't sell they get scrapped.

Hauling Off The Rusting Treasures

It would be strange to see this thread going when I' am at this moment hauling out a lot of what others would consider good stuff. I will before anyone sends me a letter bombassure you that I have some old F series trucks and parts that I have kept and will continue to do so along with a K-10 that will fit another project in the works down the road.
I had not given much thought until a week ago when an iron hauler came by my place while working the neighbors junk of which I saved a 50 F-5 V-8 and a 51 GMC ton and a 1/2 prior to his arrival to their place and a 76 F-250 4X4 to which I found out has a good motor which I started the other day, the painted blue sparkplugs I found on the dash gave to reason this may be a rebuilt engine. The body has though had very little redeemable value by anybodys standards, just small parts and hope doors.

After talking with this fellow I was overjoyed however to get rid of the other junk that I have gotten and only needed one or so parts and had the rest of it setting there becomming a rabbit and rat haven and what wasn't being destroyed by vermin was:

1 Had a couple of raids and one that I thwarted to steal what I would have sold them for in some cases very little or nothing even depending on things at times with them.

2 My dogs made a regular thing about heading over there each day for the big hunt for vermin, may have saved on dog food but there was smashed hoods from them jumping on them to chase out vermin.

3 Could not get into a lot of the vehicles because not only was every confined place was full of cactus so was the motor compartment, it was very difficult to remove anything with out being stuck.

I love junk, maybe more than most and am a confirmed packrat but this guy hauling this stuff out and paying for it besides was all I needed. We are in hopes that 50 ton will leave here by Wednesday to which should wrap it up.

Something interesting though, my dad and granddad had told of and even did as everyone else hauled scrap iron durring WW II for the war effort. From what I can tell if it didn't start that morning more than likely it was hauled to the foundry that afternoon but when it was done even though a lot of nice cars from the period went down the road I have seen quite a few of model A's and T's along with other that are still here. There is still some in tree rows yet this day.

These are different times as I feel that before long it may even become required and have to pay to have these removed rather than get paid and I opened up some ground that I had not considered when I made this heap, cows cannot eat iron and is impossible to hay a junk yard. Besides the money I get from this will help fund a shed that I can put the rest inside out of the weather and away from prying eyes.
