I just had an oil change in my 95 7.3 stroker and now I am going through more oil than fuel!
I usually run delo but they put in Rotella and shortly after that I started going through GALLONS of oil!!! No smoke, no oil leaks, no oil in exhaust, I just go through a gallon in 70 miles!!
Funny thing is every place I went to doesnt carry delo in the town im in so I had them put in rotella cuz its way cheaper for them to do it than me buying the oil alone! One thing I noticed is the ccv smoke smells sweeter haha dunno what that means but only difference.
Oh and 70mpg man whats your secret!?!?!
Im thinking my rings are weak and compression gasses are being pushed into crankcase and causing more ccv smoke. Is that true? I have no idea!
That tester is pretty pricy for something im gonna use once. Im almost in the mindset to keep making it run better with new hpop and turbo and if it blows get a new short block. Id have to buy a bike to commute 20 miles to work!!!!
Even throwing around the idea of if it does blow then buy 7.3 superduty and throw all my go fast parts into it. Too much to think about now.
$140 is not cheap but it'll tell you a lot about your problem. And it's cheaper than paying someone to do it. Do you have any buddies you can share the cost with? Maybe you could find one to borrow at a local turbo diesel site in your area - not to mention help doing it.
Foreman, the cheap one will only work on the idi engines. The 90 fitting on the end might hit the head too, IDK.
The expensive one is used in the injector hole, not sure it will work though.
If you are handy with a welder maybe you could rig up your own gauge with an old GP and a pressure gauge that goes past 400 psi?
Not sure how hard it would be to get the element out of the GP, I have not done it.
Hmmm, another thing on the "to do" list.
Foreman and Cuda - making a glow plug adapter for a compression test is very easy. I'm what you might call a bit frugal. When I saw how much the PSD glow plug adapter was I said no way. I bought a brand new grease gun hose rated for something silly like 5000psi for about $5, pulled apart one of my old plugs I'd just removed, and welded them together. Piece of cake. The grease gun hose had NPT fittings on the end, so the fittings are easy to adapt to mate up with the QD on the tester. Be careful pulling the GP apart, I expected them to be stubborn and ended up smacking myself in the nose with my big channel locks when the center pulled right out of the housing.
Thanks MagKarl, Reps sent. It looked doable to me, you just confirmed it.
That's too funny.... channel lock warning LOL! I wonder how many times I've smacked myself doing just that OK, I don't really want to know. It hurts just to think about.
