Ive been looking recently at newer trucks, and am undecided as what to get. I had a '97 F-250 7.3 and loved it, sold it so i wouldnt have any payments when i went to welding school. I will be done with school in a month and a half and need a truck. I would go with a 7.3 of any year, '94.5-'97 or '99-'03 if i could find one with low enough miles, those things seem indistructible. As for the '03 6.0's, i know too many folks that had wayyyy to many problems with them. So i guess my next question is a '04 6.0 or a '05 - '07 6.0. So many choices, whats a guy to do ?! I guess the big thing is ill be driving alot, so it needs to be farly comfortable and which ones are the least troublesome?
There are some outstanding 03's and 04's but it is said that the 06's and 07's were the most reliable years. Be sure and get the OASIS report before you nuy.
And as for your comfort question, they lengthened the rear springs in '05 and if you're thinking 4x4, the '05 on up front is a coil spring set up that turns tighter than previous years, is nicer riding, uses basically the same control arms as the F550, is a 6000 lb rated Dana 60, has a redesigned steering system.
I think the frame strength was increased in '05 as well, and I know the brakes are bigger. Oh also they upped the rated capacities, the SRW 4x4 F350 was up to 11,400#, the same as the other guys DRWs, the rear axle was a 7k lb unit in the SRW 350s too. Oh and they also came out with the integrated brake controller -- way cool for us that tow.
That's about all I can think of, there do seem to be less complaints the later the year. Remember any 6.0 will have the Torqshift if it's an auto -- an extremely stout transmission...
