Not sure what you mean by "smoking valve cover" but it either means that your valve cover gasket is leaking on the exhaust manifold, or it's coming from the breather.
If it's coming from the breather, you need new rings.
If it's coming from the breather, you need new rings.

The smoke sounds like crankcase fumes. The first thing to do is make sure the PCV valve is working and has good suction when the engine is running. If that is working, then it does sound like excessive blowby, meaning a worn engine. Don't worry though, you can run it a long time like this and get good service out of it. You can rig a hose to a catch can if it's making too big of a mess on the engine.
