I've been toying with the idea to put headers and a new exhaust on my truck. Only problem is that with all the dern articles Ive read and folks i've talked to I get conflicting views. Any opinion and input is much appreciated. So here she goes:
I've got a 90 f150 302.
Headers: I've heard it's not even worth it but if it were I'd go long tube. Something reasonably cheap but still decent quality. Any suggestions? Is it worth it?
Exhaust: I'll either go true duals out the rear. The duals would have an x pipe as opposed to an h pipe which i've heard is not as good. The pipe diameter would be about 2 1/4"
or i'd go single 3" that would Y into duals out the rear. Both setups would have no cats...gotta love kansas emissions, and glass packs.
Long tubes are worth the money... I noticed a good gain in performance and at the same time i went to a 37" tire from a 33" im kinda curious how it would be with 33"s back on it
As for inexpensive headers I would go with Hooker for the 302. JMO.
For the exhaust if you have dual fuel tanks you will be better off running with a single exhaust as you can't balance your exhaust properly running both pipes on one side of the truck unless you run them on the outside of the frame.
Id go with hooker or flowtech, people say the flowtechs rot out but I have them on my plow truck and its been like 3-4 years and they are fine, but I wash my truck off after every snow and salting. Id go 2.5 true duals out the back/sides. Long tubes are the only way to go. A X or a H pipe isnt going to be easy to make.. I just have seperate exhaust and it all comes together into a dual in dual out Flowmaster 40 series.
95f350xl, where's your cats? I asked a place to build me a system utilizing a set of LT's and the dude kept repeating the "catalytic converter must be in the stock position"...I need an idea so I can show the exhaust shops what I'm after...
Ugh there is no cat, but when inspection time come I unbolt the catback from the flange and the stock cat bolts to that flange. Just get 2 bullet cats from ebay for like 30 each and make them weld them into the pipes.
I can't add as wether they are worth the money, but I've been saving my pennies for some LT headers, a nice single setup with highflow cat and a good muffler.
I'm very close to purchase and can't wait to wake up my 351w.
LT's with a good exhaust behind them will definitely good you a power increase, you will not have to shift as late when pulling hills. If you got an manual that is, i really think having a manual and being around hills/mountains is the best way to tell if you had a power increase.
I believe that if your planning on doing any other decents mods to an engine, the exhaust is where you should start. A good exhaust system(LTs, not shorties) will multiply every later mods power increase. So if your planning on other real mods(heads, intake, cam, rr's) LTs ARE worth the money without a doubt. So the biggest question is, is this only the beginning of my tuning? What other plans do you have for your truck, engine wise?
If your not gonna be putting many other mods in, then that's simply personal opinion. I love the sound of a ford V8, so that alone lets me think the exhaust was worth it. some people like cosmetics, your thing is your thing.
Oh and I might forget about the X or H pipe if you've got dual tanks and or 4x4. I've been told that those pipes are best efficient when placed the same distance away from the ex. ports on both banks. That'll be a problem, unless you want a really low hanging exhaust.
