Intermittent A/C, please help!!

My A/C works most of the time. BUT sometimes, it will blow lukewarm, almost damp air, like its not going thru the drier. Dont know what the problem is. i replaced a dry rotted vacuum line on the drivers side. i am going to replace the one on the passenger side tonight. i checked the freon and all is good there. what in the world else could this be?

Dang, I saved a thread that is in regards to fixing this problem. It's a common problem and the solution is to shim some part of the compressor.

I do not have the thread saved here at work but do at home. When I get home I will post up the link.

SpringerPop is an expert at this problem.

I'm certainly not an "expert", but I can write up a fix. Thanks, anyway, Scott!

Reading these would be a good place to start:

I have heard from fellow powerstroke owners that when they were experiencing that problem, the a/c clutch needed to be replaced. It doesn't make much sense to me but they have done it on several of their work trucks with good turnouts.

Maybe there is a way to test the clutch.....although it would be hard being that the problem is intermittent. :/
Hope this might help.

The a/c cluch doesn't 'need' to absolutely replaced if it is intermittent, just try the shim trick. If that doesn't work, then you need to replace the clutch as well as the pulley. A wear pattern is made between the clutch and pulley and they both should be matched or flat if you replace them. Just like if a rotor is gouged or badly worn, you don't just put new pads on and keep driving.

Well, since the links above don't work, let's try it this way:

See Post #8 in this thread:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...-question.html

Also, #10 in this one:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...king-well.html

Especially #3 in this one:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...-problems.html

Hope that works better for you.

This is absolute crucial advice right here^^^^^^^^^^

If the little clutch plate, or the pulley face is worn, spen the 40ish bucks and replace them both.

8mm bolt to remove the clutch plate, and a three jaw puller to remove the pulley.

i believe the airgap should be .025 to .027 at .030 the elctromagnet is not strong enough to pull the plate to the pulley.

Grant, could this be that strange sound?

i found the noise!!! it was the passenger side i/c pipe rubbing up against the airbox where hte blower motor is!!!! been a crazy week or would have called you and let you know, but i did post it back on my original thread. the pulley face and the clutch face did have signs of wear. would it be ok to ride with my shim job for another week (til i get paid so patty doesnt yell too much) ? the shim job, done it tonight, sure has seemed to work well. its about at .027 acording to my calculations.

AIRFLOW!!! if the condensor cannot cool the charge it will blow warm air. Yes the clutch may need shiming, but not that often. I have seen too many radiators plugged with bugs, dirt, weeds, oil etc. What would the front of your truck look like if it hadn't been washed in how ever many miles. the bugs seem to make it through the condendor and intercooler and stop right in the radiator. I have had no luck trying to wash the radiator in the truck. We just pull the radiator and pressure wash it from the back to the front. if possible, now wash out the intercooler too. Its amazing how much difference this will make not only in A/C performance but overall cooling. When I first got my new truck, the bottum 3 inch of radiator fins were completely plugged. and it only had 95,000 miles.
just talking from experience. Barney

After I did mine, it's been more than two completely trouble-free YEARS.

Consider it completely fixed, and don't think about it at all until it wears wide again. That may be years from now.

something that happened to me this year that caused this same problem was the wiring on the plug-in for the a/c compressor was worn out. Re-built the connectors and haven't had a problem since

I gave you reps for this one Barney.
And I think you just gave me another weekend project, too.
