I am replacing my tires today and want to increase the siize from 265/75/16
(e rated) to 285/75/16 (d rated). My rims are stock and 16X7 wide. I own an '02 f350 PSD cc sb. My concern is that the larger 285 have an "approved" rim width of 7.5- 9, but the "measured" rim width says 8. The 265 is 7-8 approved and 7.5 measured. My questions are am I going to be allright putting the larger tire on, and what is the difference between approved width and measured width and does 1/2 and inch in rim width make a difference? I ahve noticed that several people on the forum have 285/75/16 iress, I am guessing that mounting the larger tire must be ok. Thanks in advance. Aaron
FWIW, I'm running 285/75/16 BFG A/T KO's on stock rims and I get some feathering/cupping in the inside edge of the tires. I've been told its from running the wider tire on a stock rim, but also told that its just because these particular tires want to be rotated a lot. Keep an eye on your new tires to make sure they don't start wearing funny, because as expensive as tires are you want them to stay in good shape.
Cooper Discover ST, which is the tire that I am replacing. I just got 55,000 miles on the last set, I thought that was pretty good for a 1 ton truck, I also never got stuck, or slid off a road, came close though.
I bought my truck earlier this year, tried to go 5K rotation intervals but the tires start acting up at around 3K so I'm going to start rotating every 3K and see how they hold up.
