im am close to buying my new tires. these tires will be used 70/30 on/off road. all i want offroad is a good mud tire. i have a small buisiness puling other people out of the mud and i want a tire that will help me excel at that along with making me, myself, a better bogger. i have listed below the mud terrains i consider reasonable price range and wear range. would yall please give me some suggestions and advice as well as opinions on these tires.
they are...
33x12.50x16.50 swamper radials
35x12.50x16 trxus mt
35x12.50x16.50 grabber mt
315/75 r16 pro comp mt
by the way i have a 1990 f250 4x4 with some minor modifications to the engine and exhaust but nothing to the drivetrain and i will be adding a 3 inch body lift soon
If mud is your main concern out of your choices go with the Swamper SSR Radials, TSL Radials, or the Trxus Radials. 4 Wheel and Off Road had a tire test in which the Swamper SSR radials ouperformed the TSL Radials in the mud. The SSR also has the advantage of siping on the tread for wet weather driving. I'm not familiar with the Trxus tire, but they appear to have smaller voids between the tread blocks which would give them a quieter road ride and less vibration. Some guys here have the Trxus tires and really like them and hopefully they can let you know how they performed in the mud.
The B.F. Goodrich Mud terrains have been good to me. great on road, and really agressive off road. Of course boggers will always give the best off road traction.
I've got a '94 F250 that sees 70/30 on/off road use. I've got the TRXUS, and love the tire, but I can't wait until I can get new tires, as I want something with a bigger void between the lugs. The tires are great in the mud, but still aren't the biggest and baddest... The on the road behavior is excellent, with great traction in wet weather. The noise is progressively getting louder and more obnoxious, but not enough to bother me.
for a good mud tire i would recomend any from super swamper. they out do all others in the mud. i would recomend the tsl or tsl/sx. they not only look good but the kick but in the deep goo. as for the pro comps dont get them unless u just want a plain mud tire that does not do good. goodyear grabbers do all right in the mud and the ones i had on my 89 had good road manners. bf goodrich mud terrains are a good tire on the street and in the mud. they are in my oppinion the best mud terrain on the market if you are running on the street too. just remember do your research and get the ones that you like and are what you want. you dont want to get a mud terrain tire and wish you had the extra traction that a supper swamper gives you. even though i know that most of the people on this forum will go swamper all the way. thats what i put on my truck last october and i love them. and am glad i spent the extra money on em.
'75 F-100 4x4, 4" lift
35x15.5x15 super swamper TSL/SX
mini-spooled 9" rear end
390 w/ cam,headers,
and 4 barrell edelbrock
RUN from the Procomps. I have them and am not too hppy with them. They are just a step above the BFG allterrain. The voids aren't big enough and wet driving I just slide on the road.
I'm running 33" Grabber M/Ts on both my off-road rig and my daily driver. I love them. I have 30,000 on the daily driver and still 60% tread left. They clean out MUCH better than the BFG M/Ts I replaced and are better on the wet pavment and in the snow as well. I have put them through some serious abuse off-road and never have one fail yet.

I new version of the BFG M/T or the old version?
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
I guess it depends on what kind of mud you have there. I can tell you that here in Oklahoma Mud Kings are the most popular for several reasons. First is their performance off road. They clean well and seem to be tough agaist cuts and punctures. Second is their price. For just over $100 a tire you can save a few $ over the BF/MT which is almost identical.
well i have been running my 35x14.50x16.5 BOGGERS for two years, may to october and they still have a honest 65%rear,85%front and i ain't scared to use them they empty great, not too loud on pavement, and canel though water.
81'ford 3/4 ton 3" body lift headers, dual exhuast with glasspacks 351m soon to be puting in 351c 4v quench heads with 432hp,485fp dyno tested in 2002 then in 2003 4" suspension trail master.

I had the old version, but after comparing the new to the old at a run this summer, the lugs are still the same size and space apart. The new sidewalls are WAY more aggressive and I am told stronger, but the overall design is still the same. The Generals use a staggered sideways "V" shape tread in the middle that just cleans out better for me than the all one direction "\" tread on the BFGs and works better in the snow and on wet pavement for me also.
I'm not knocking the BFGs, IMO they are a good tire, but they are overpriced and just didn't work good for me...
I don't want to turn this into the classic "BFGs are the greatest off-road tire" debate. He is looking for opinions and I gave him mine. To each his own. I tried the BFGs, didn't like them and went to the Generals after a more experienced wheeler than me suggested them to me and I have been more than satisfied with them and will be getting the 35" Generals after the 33"ers wear out on my trail rig.
I prefer BFG A/T tires myself. Good wear, decent noise control, and they stay together. I've never had a BFG fail nor have I personally heard of one.
They make the A/T KO, which is more geared towards trail/on-road/snow. If you're talking serious mud, they have the M/T, but it's much more aggressive and you give up some highway comfort/noise/handling in the process.
This much is for sure. When it comes to mixing off-road/on-road designs, there is NO perfect tire, only compromises.
The new BFGs have a few differences. The tread is not exactly the same, its designed similiar, but the new version has a lot more rubber actually on the ground. It's softer, stronger, and has the much more aggressive side lugs. Not 100% sure if the older version had this, but the new one has a rim protector on it. It's an extra seam of rubber around the edge of the rim so you don't hit curbs or rocks.
