Flywheel Question

Will a single mass flywheel off of a 1999 PSD 6spd work on my 1997 PSD 5spd dual mass, and are there any good clutch options that will work with that flywheel/trans combo?

I don't have the answer you want because I don't know. It would seem since it is a 7.3 it should fit. Wow that is a good question. I have never seen that one. If it is possible that would be an economical way to get a SMF. Usuall a new one is around 200-300 bucks. You should be able to find a used SMF for a reasonable price.

I already have the 99 PSD single mass flywheel. My current truck has a dual mass. I inherited the single mass when one of my customers had me do the Luk conversion on his truck.

I am still wondering myself. I am tinking some of this running rough may be attributed to the DMF in this truck I have. I would like to use this 99 SD flywheel I have if I can.

Did some checking and on the Carolina Clutch page: Luk Solid Flywheel Replacement: Flywheel &amp Stock Replacement Flywheel - Carolina Clutch it shows the same flywheel to fit a 94 to an 04. So the flywheel will fit.

But they show a different clutch for the 94-97 and then the 99-04, so I don't think that the clutch will work. Probably diffent input shafts on the trans.

So bottom line is, get the right clutch, have the flywheel resurfaced and your good to go.

The question would be, what clutch to use then?

You would have to use a 94-97 clutch, SMF or DMF would be your choice. I would always go with a SMF over a DMF anyday.

Valair all day long. check out their web site, find the clutch you want. Call and talk to Dan or Kevin specificly. Tell them Cody from Death Row Diesel sent ya, and they will make the price even better. And also ask them about the flywheel. On their site they list 2 different part #'s. It could be because of a different pilot bearing. But ask Dan or Kevin. They will know without a doubt. Tell them I sent ya and they will answer all your question.

That is what I had been figuring. I am pretty sure that the input shaft is different between the 5 and 6 speeds. And I know that there are a couple different pilots as well on the gas motor trucks, one of which is the same as the SD 6spd. I'll be sure to look into Valair when I get ready to do a clutch. The clutch I have is a new Dual Mass. The previous owner had just had it installed before I got the truck, so I can address some of the other problems first. Gotta prioritize these projects ya know. Thanks to all for the info.
