1993 Ranger skipping problem

Here's the details. 1993,3.0, auto,130,000 mi.,4dw.. New wires, plugs, cap, fuel filter and rotor. Skips on takeoff and seems to clear up while constantly accelerating. When the speed levels off it begins to skip hard and shudder until you accelerate again. When backing up , it shudders and I can smell raw gas. No check engine light, and the Cats have been gutted so they are straight thru. This condition occured before the cats were altered!Overall lacks any kind of power! Anyone with any ideas!

Did it do this before the wire, cap and rotor change? Are the wires on tight at both the plug and cap? Is it possible that your new cap could have a crack in it? Is it possible the fuel filter got installed backwards by accident?

The crack in the new cap is possible. The wires are secure at both ends and the filter is on correct. It was doing this before I started changing parts.

This should be turning on the check engine light. Have you pulled the codes?

Since you are smelling raw gas, try pulling the vacuum hose off of the fuel pressure regulator. Is it wet with gas?

Just for the heck of it, check under the hood when it is dark for wires arching. You might even try spraying a fine mist of water on them while it is running. If your cap is cracked a spray around it should cause it to shudder. I had a similar problem a couple months ago and had changed everything like you have. Come to find out one of my new wires was defective. Pretty easy check that doesn't take but a minute. It probably isn't the problem, but?

As far as the fuel smell...Did you replace the PCV valve or check the vacuum lines going to the fuel charcoal canister and return lines?
