I'm considering buying a F250 4x4 w/ a 460. How many miles do the engines typically last? I plan on performing a compression, vacuum, and oil pressure test, but would still like to know how long the 460 TYPICALLY lasts. I realize that varies with maintenance, usage, etc.
i had one untouched with 380 000 km's so that would be...236 000 miles according to my calculations and it still ran good lots of power. that was an 85 though still had a carburetor
i have the 88 4x4 c6 460 with almost 300,000. 2 weeks ago i had to change the water pump an install a new rad.thats the most i have done so far. now i'm replacing front rotors an wheel bearings.but if you take care of it,it'll take care of you.
I have owned a few f-250's with the 460 including my current ride which I plan to keep forever. The engine is very reliable, has adequate horsepower and torque, but must be considered a truck engine. They really inhale the gas. My current truck has about 227,000 on it with the usual repairs. I get about 10 mpg around town and 12 mpg on the freeway. I will be replacing it with a smaller truck next year as my work needs have changed, but I like it so much I won't let it go.
460 in stock form is a durable, low rpm, grunt engine capable of very high miles.
Gas mileage is obviously a concern. Of course one could be abused to the point that its life span is greatly reduced, but from the testimonies I have heard they are capable of 200k easily and 300k is not unheard of.
My '96 F-250 had 316,000 mile on it when I had to take to get the motor replaced. All that was wrong with it was blown head gasket. Ran for 2 months with coolant pouring into the cylinders before it gave out.
I would have done it myself but did not have a place to do the work and it was cheaper to have the motor replaced than to have the head gaskets replaced. Still haven't figured out why but...
