Last weekend I was merrily hauling my 10K toybox with my '99 7.3 up a 6% grade pulling about 25lbs boost when the IC Hose blew off. I reclamped the hose and while at only 15Lbs boost, it blew again. I had trouble keeping the clamp from sliding off while tightening it until I used a plastic ruler as a spacer to keep it in place and after tightening the clamp as much as I could, I removed the ruler and the clamp slipped again. I tugged on the hose and it seemed pretty solid so I fired up the truck and keep the boost at 10 and under and it got us the 150 miles to home.
I did a search on this forum and it seems the 6.0 guys have had the same problem, but could not find a specific fix for the 7.3. My truck has 160,000 miles on it. Is there fix for the 7.3 or should I just follow what the 6.0 guys have done.
i had this happen to me and what i did was take off all the boots and sprayed everything down with brake clean and wiped it off. the boots and the ends of the ic pipes. then tightend everything back down. never had a problem after that.
take the boot off and clean the pipe, clamp and boot with simple clean..spray the pipe with hair spray..slide the boot on and reclamp..
X2. Getting the oil residue off the boots and pipe first is the only way to ensure they won't be slipping off again soon. The hairspray provides a stick surface to help hold things together.
Older boots will tend to soften up a bit, but you said they seem fine. You shouldn't have any probs after everything is cleaned up with Simple Green then coated with hair spray.....it's a cheap fix!
OK, sounds good. One of the 6.0 guys said he replaced the hose clamp with a hardware store clamp as it has grooves in it to help it bite into the rubber. I might do that also.
